Hello hephaest and welcome to the BC forums. You are currently running an outdated version of HijackThis. Please click on the link below and download the most current version:HijackThis_sfx.exe
Delete your current HijackThis.exe file and double-click on the file you just downloaded and then click on the Unzip button to install the newer version. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ directory by default.

Start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here as a relpy to this topic and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi hephaest. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\yfevw.dll/sp.html#10001

Thanks for the instructions Oldtimer.
I did all the steps that you gave.
during step 3 (deleting of files) most of the files that you said to delete
were there and i deleted them. one file : c:\windows\crjs.dll was not there
but there was a crjs.exe which i did not touch because i was not sure it should
be deleted.
after doing all the steps, i noticed some improvement
i could once again open windows folders. but, closing them still causes an
error with windows explorer.exe
also, I have a firewall (sygate) that i installed once i got infected. and
even after i did all the steps i still get attempts of explorer.exe or appwp32.exe
trying to connect to 447.cc (195.225.176.29) i dont let it. So the infection is still
there. also, looking at this new hijackthis log, i see that something that you told me
to get rid of in hjt, reappeared. I scanned the pc with norton antivirus and
trendmicro and bitdefender and etrust and they did find some stuff. a vbs
cript virus newlove.A, and some trojans. But i am still infected.
heres the new hjt log
thanks

Hi hephaest. The CWS infection is still here so let's go through the fix again. Print these directions and then physically disconnect from the internet when instructed to do so and proceed with the following steps inorder. Do not skip any of the steps.

Step #1

Download About:Buster.zip and unzip it to its own directory. Start AboutBuster and click the Ok button. Now click the Update button and then the Check for Update button. If an update is available click the Download Update button. When the updates have been downloaded close AboutBuster (do not run it yet).

Step #2

Disconnect from the internet and Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\mnkth.dll/sp.html#10001

Hi Oldtimer, I did all the steps.
One glich i had was when i tried to update aboutbuster, it gave errors. so i wanted to see if it works before i started the whole process. so i ran it in the beginning.
i then ran it again later on during step 6. The log of aboutbuster includes both runs. CWShredder didnt find anything again. I ran 3 virus scans. trend micro didnt find anything. bitdefender found some viruses in the email, but i could find those emails. i deleted them a long time ago. panda didnt work (seems to not scan the files). etrus didnt find anything. Adaware found aboutwebsearch

after all this, the system is behaving better. noone is trying to access the u47.cc website anymore. Explorer.exe is still generating errors whenever i try to open a folder. So i cant open windows folders.

Hi hephaest. the log is clean. Good job! How are things running? Any further problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall and a good antivirus application like the ones you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and antivirus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Hey hephaest. that is possible. What is the error message (text, error numbers etc)? It might be missing files or it mght be a configuration issue.

the error popup simply says:
explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created

I have no idea where the log goes in order to look at it.

Hi hephaest. What Symantec product is running on this computer. It looks like a part of one of their products is there but not the entire product. Try uninstalling any Symantec/Norton products and see if the error goes away.

Cheers.

Oldtimer,
I had a trial version of Norton Antivirus 5.0 on this pc that I installed to fight
this virus that i had. But i removed it after it didnt find any viruses. I guess it might
have left something on there.
They had a program on symantec webpage called symNRT.exe which was supposed to clean the system of the nav. So i ran it but the problem still persits.
maybe something is still left. could you tell me how to get rid of what you saw on my pc (the leftover sysmantec stuff)?

Hi hephaest. If you have gone here and followed all of the directions for removing Norton then continue with the following steps.

Step #1

Now we need to remove a service.

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
    • sc delete Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Step #2

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in. Also test IE and Windows Explorer and see if they are working properly.

Cheers.

Hi Oldtimer
I disabled Symantec Core LC in services.msc
then I tried running the command in CMD and it gave the following error:
'sc' is not recognized as an internal or external command ....
I then rebooted and checked if opening a windows folder caused a problem with
explorer.exe. It still did
here is the hijackthis log after the reboot
