Hi,

I have a Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 , Service pack 2. It has Intel Pentium 4, 3.07 GHz with a 704MB RAM. The problem I am experiencing is that my PC often hangs (even at startup), and performs basic tasks such as opening a window real slowly. I've also experienced Bsods once in awhile, but often too quick for me to catch anything significant. I suspect it may be some form of infection or maybe some hardware/software related issue? I am not sure whether I posted this topic in the right place, so I was hoping that someone who knows about Viruses and/or Software/hardware in relation to XP Home Edition. I hope that you can provide me some advice as soon as possible. Below, is my DDS logfile and attached is my Attach.txt logfile. Hope it helps and feel free to approach me for more information should you need it. =)

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

C: is FIXED (NTFS) - 35 GiB total, 0.447 GiB free.

Hi

On system drive there should definitely be more free space than 0.447 GiB. Try to uninstall some not needed programs. Also, hard drive partitions should be defragged.

Ad-Aware SE Personal is not supported anymore and should be uninstalled.

Uninstall Adobe Flash Player and get the latest one here.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13.
  • Click the
    Download
    button to the right.
  • Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck MSN toolbar if it's offered there.

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file regExport.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.
regedit /a c:\registryExport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa"
notepad c:\registryExport.txt

Double-click on regExport.bat file to execute it. c:\registryExport.txt file should open in Notepad. Post back its contents & a fresh dds log (after doing all updating and uninstallations).

Hi

One possibility is low amount of free space on c: drive. Did you get the registry export results from that batch run I asked you to do?

Hi

It seems you didn't uninstall old Java versions yet. Please uninstall all Java versions that are older than Java 6 Update 13.

Download ERUNT
Save it to your desktop. Run and install this program.

In the box that opens ONLY choose
System registry.

Then click OK.

Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Notification Packages"=hex(7):73,63,65,63,6c,69,00,00

It should look like this -> Posted Image

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

Reboot and create & post a fresh dds.txt log. How's the system running?

Hi there,

Thanks for the prompt reply. The systems pretty much the same. Internet had some difficulty connecting to the website. So, I had to do a system restore. System's still pretty lag, I think highly due to the lack of Hard Drive space. So, I am trying to see if I can upgrade the hardware or something. Other than that, so far no blue screens as of late and the system is pretty ok I guess. So, here's the update DDS log.
