Your info links I found very helpful. Saves time when they are compiled like you have them. I can't say I read every word, but in general I found that it helped me to decide to hasten installation to get started in figuring out what can/can't/should or shouldn't be done now that it's here.

I think I'm going to hold off a while on installing SP2. I only have one computer to play with, so I tend to be very cautious about what I install. I've been reading where some people are having troubles with it, especially lap tops. I figure I'll wait, and let them work out "some" of the bugs in the public release, before I install it.

SP2 (Service Pack 2) is the latest Service Pack for XP.
It adds some new features to XP, and also addresses some of the security flaws.
Here's a list of features:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Feature List

A benchmarking comparison between SP1 and SP2:
Should I Install SP2?

Conclusion:

After looking at the results, one thing is certain: You have more to gain than you to to lose by installing SP2.

Performance is for the most part identical to SP1, except in a few cases. In those cases, SP2 was actually faster! There were only one or two instances where SP1 was faster, and that was by the slimmest of margins.

What surprized me was how much gaming performance was increased by upgrading to SP2 and DirectX 9c! I was NOT expecting this, especially on the midrange x600 XT card we used for testing. Nonetheless, most games do benefit from the upgrade.

So with all the new security patches and features, and mostly increased performance, you have no reason NOT to install SP2.

Thanks a bunch for your help. I am so very new to all this computing business and, I must admit, very timid about adding or deleting things to current configuration, which is Windows XP, by the way. I always forget to mention that. From what you sent me, I don't think I need SP2 at the moment. Or at least I think I'll wait until I'm less wet behind the ears. I am very impressed with this BC site. Such knowledgeable people. Thanks again.

You're welcome, einseidle.

I finally installed SP2 a couple of weeks ago.
Did a few things to prepare for it.
It installed with no problems.

Glad you like the site.
If you have any questions, just ask.
