Lost Bitdefender 2009 TS and susbsequnetly tried to reinstall - wouldn't let me do it.
Then noticed couldn't safe boot.
Then Bitdefender tried GMER tool that wouldn't even complete the log generation.

So here I am.

DDS report for now.

Please advise as to how I should proceed - in the meantime - I'm backing up.

Hello rtb1314 :thumbup2: Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest to you while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Please perform the following:

Do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

When completed please both both logs fromRSIT as well as the one from Kaspersky.

Thanks,

Hi,

Thanks for taking on my issue.

OK Kaspersky would not start the scan after download - so no log

RSIT ran once and then asked me to report an error at the trendmicro HJT part - I submittd.

I tried running it again and I got an error that hijack this is not a valid win32 application.....

Looks like its taking over the executables perhaps.....

Anyway awaiting your advice as to the next step.

L.

Let's try HJT by itself and see if we can get it to run. I would suggest renaming it to something you can remember as you follow the instructions below.

Save HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon to start the program.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
After the final dialogue box it will launch HijackThis.

Click on the scan button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Save the log, and post me it in your next reply.

Got it - had to rename the exe file though.

Hopefully this will get things rolling.

OK, thanks. Bear with me and I'll get back as quickly as possible. We are really swamped so some times it takes a little bit.

Oh, I meant to ask. Did you try GMER as a standalone or was it BitDefender that tried it?

bit defender sent it to me as zip file...so I don't know if they modified it.

Its probably qn incomplete log but here's what it gave me - up to the point prior to crashing out.

Good deal. That is helpful.

I have to put together a fix and since I am still in training anything I suggest must be approved by a coach first. This is to both help us learn and to protect the users who post their logs. So as I said just as soon as I can get the fix together and get it approved I will get back to you.

OK - sounds great.

I envy your new found knowledge - I would love to know all about the HJT log stuff and how to help or harm myself :thumbup2: - but I'm limited by time - it is courageous what you guys do.

I will have one other question - regarding one of my back drives and an infected system restore area which I cannot erase or clear out via the standard approach - system restore off and then on etc....

Until then I look forward to the fix - lets hope its a good one - you certainly have put the folks at BD to shame....more on that later too.

I enjoy doing this, it's a good learning experience and allows me to help some others. The reason I wound up here was because of an infection I could not get rid of.

We'll deal with the restore program if it is not cleared up by some of the tools we use. When we uninstall ComboFix which we are going to use it may take care of it then.

Anyway let's do the following:

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

combo detects that bitdefender's reqltime scanner (antivirus) is still active but I see nothing to disable etc.

Should I continue?

Try the following and see if it works:

BIT DEFENDER
  • Move mouse arrow to the Bitdefender icon in the bottom right of the desktop. (The little pictures in the lower right corner. When the arrow is placed on the little picture, a caption appears that tells what it is.)
  • Double click the icon for Bit Defender.
  • When the Bit Defender window appears, move mouse arrow to the left side and click >> Virus Shield.
  • Move mouse arrow to the black check by Virus Shield is enabled and click.
  • The black works will change to red, >> Virus Shield is disabled.
  • Move mouse arrow to the top right corner and click the down arrows.
  • Bit Defender is now inactive.
  • To enable Bit Defender, do the same steps except click to enable.

there is no icon at all, nor is there amenu group for BD - the uninstall I tried took out all the dashboards, menu items and icons.

looks like there is some remnant somwhere but I don' know which process it is?
