Hi there,
I'm what you would call a newbie when it comes to anything technical. I am usually able to resolve my problems via searching the web for answers but this just seems above me. I am trying HJT for the first time on many recommendations and was hoping to have some success. I have tried downloading various antiviruses/malware removers but I cannot update the files nor can I update Windows Defender (I believe it is due to a trojan). With that being said, here is my log:

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi

I recommend uninstalling P2P file sharing software like uTorrent installed there. P2P networks are nowadays one of those channels users get infected.


Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully.


Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

Hi again cycotichinc,

I recommend considering uninstall for P2P file sharing programs you have installed there. Nowadays major part of infections are received from P2P networks.


If you've used removable storages with the system please have those attached so that we can clean those as well (if infected).


Uninstall these vulnerable Javas:
Java™ 6 Update 6
Java™ 6 Update 7
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6



Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Close browsers (this window included) and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.


Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.


Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) CleanerŠ by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.


Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner as instructed in the screenshot here. If you get a message that latest Java must be installed "enable" the Java add-ons in IE7. Do that using "manage add-ons" from the IE7 toolbar.


Post back its report, a fresh dds.txt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log.

Hello again Blade,
Thank you for taking the time to help me. I uninstalled the utorrent program like you suggested and ran the appropriate programs. Unfortunately, my CFScript resultant log got lost somehow and I was wondering if I ran it again, would it give the same results? Sorry for taking so long, this step of the process was definitely time consuming. I'm not sure what to say here, but it seems the lines that separate the posts have disappeared as well as the upload box. I'm sorry for troubling you but if you could let me know how to get those back, I will post what I have asap.
PS. as a side note, while the CFScript was running in the combofix.exe, I noticed that the two malicious files (I'm assuming) that were detected earlier were deleted by the program. Not sure if that solves it or not, but hopefully we're getting closer! ;)

On another note, I decided to run adaware and test to see if I could use the web update feature (I was unable to when the trojan was present) and it updated successfully! Just adding this information in. Thanks again.

I decided to try opening the webpage using Internet Explorer rather than Mozilla Firefox and everything is A-OK. Uploading the files now. Also, just curious as how i can return Firefox to its previous goodness or if you recommend a different browser. Thank you for putting up with me. :thumbup2:

Please search for ComboFix.txt file on your hard drive (probably in c:\ or in c:\ComboFix folder). Post it back here if you found it.

Now, to make sure your USB devices (if you have any) are clean and won't reinfect the system, please attach those in and run Kaspersky online scanner for whole 'my computer'. That earlier run seemed to target only critical areas.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.


THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.


B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.


Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type "c:\users\chan\Desktop\Downloads\ComboFix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.



The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
    If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are (if you don't have any already):
    Antivir
    Avast!

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.


Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

I see nothing out of the ordinary as of now, I have reinstalled spybot and adaware and successfully updated them. I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me get over this "crisis" and I will try to update you with news as to how my computer is doing from time to time. This has been a great learning experience for me and I wish nothing but the best for you and the rest of this great team. :thumbup2:
