OS: Windows XP pro
Laptop : Dell Latitude D610
Internet Connection: Wireless
Browser: IE7

PROBLEMS
Tuesday 3/24
- Trojan took over google search links. Clicking on links opened new window and unrelated page -- usually strange fake sites or ad sites.
- Windows Security kept notifying me that I might not have Anti Virus protection. Could not figure out why Symantec was not working.
- Bought Kaspersky AV software and installed. Ran many scans that found Trojans and malware, etc. and deleted/quarantined. But Google link problems still existed.

Wed. 3/25
- Ran more scans. Contacted Kaspersky Help. They had me change AV settings to strongest and deepest. Ran for a long time. Found many things and deleted or quarantined. Still had google or yahoo search link problem!

Thurs. 3/26
- Contacted Kaspersky again... they had me change scan settings to strongest. Ran full scan again. Found more trojans, malware, riskware and deleted/quarantined.
When done, even though I was connected to the internet and had email working in Outlook...
IE or Firefox could no longer display web pages.
- Contacted Kaspersky again. They gave me ATF-Cleaner and dnscure_all programs. I ran them and still had web page display problem.
- Kaspersky had me download and run Malwarebytes' Anti malware. Still had problem with no web page working.
- Contacted my ISP. They had me change TCP/IP address and DNS settings. Still had problem.
- Changed them back to Obtain IP and DNS address automatically. Still had problem.

Friday 3/27
- Ran ComboFix. Still have problem -- Outlook email works, but IE and Firefox won't display any web pages.

I have the log from ComboFix.
Can anyone help me?

ps. I am using my friend's desktop now. I have my laptop with the problem next to me.

thx

Welcom to this forum

To start you off I would suggest you fully update the Malwarebytes program and run another scan with it ; then post all the log reports you have from that program for someone to check for you

You mention ComboFix?

You may wish to be aware of

ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Any posts containing CF Logs will be ignored.

Lets see the Malwarebytes scan reports then go from there :flowers:

Not that I am aware of, no. BUT I suggest you do nowt with the computer except run the scan.

Someone will be along to check the reports for you once you have posted them and guide you accordingly

Hi,sorry for the delay, Had an issue to deal with. So it's running better now,any more signs of infection. Since we cleared all the temps and cookies it may be a little slower till your favorite haunts repopulate. Let me know.

No signs left of infection. Plan to run scans regularly using at least two different programs.
Computer and me feeling much better...

Thanks boopme! I am impressed by this site and your great response to my issues.
I'll be back... but hopefully under less dire circumstances.

You're welcome and thanks for the kind words, dvs.

Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Vista Users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point and Disk Cleanup.
