Does anyone know if you can set up a wrt54g2 to work as a repeater and extend the signal of an existing network. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

In a strictly wireless function? No, it won't work that way.

It could be setup as a access point by changing it from a "gateway" to a "router", connecting it via a cable to the first router (lan to lan) out to the area you want to extend wireless access to.
