I was surfing a gaming website, and randomly started getting pop-ups from my anti-virus stating that some sort of Trojan was attempting to infect my computer. The quarantine and removal steps of the scanner "failed". I ran Spybot (no problems found), CWShredder (nothing found) and finally my anti-virus full scan again. It found two virus files, one it quarantined, the other failed. I went through the standard removal of malware steps, but I'm still having issues. Aside from abnormal slowdowns, I'm also getting odd re-directs while on the web. If I click a link on a google or Yahoo search, it takes me to a random ad site, similar to a coolwebsearch item. One is about travellife or something. I haven't had much luck killing this particular bug.

I'm not adding a post to bump my thread, just wanted to add some info on what I have done since I was first attacked. I noticed in my log (shown above) that three lines appeared at the exact moment the virus/malware first hit me:

2009-03-25 19:37 1 a------- c:\windows\9g234sdfdfgjf23
2009-03-25 19:37 2 ----h--- c:\windows\t55ft2808f44.dat
2009-03-25 19:37 13,312 a------- c:\windows\system32\dll32.dll

19:37 was the moment I received the first virus pop-up from my anti-virus, as well as when the sudden page re-directs and other issues started. I also noticed that other users with a similar attack had an .exe file running called pp02.exe or pp04.exe Sure enough, that's on my log:

mRun: [pp] c:\windows\pp04.exe

When I ran a full anti-virus scan, it found pp04.exe and could not access/quarantine it. I found it as a running process in my task manager, so I shut it down and then asked the anti-virus program to clean/kill it. This time, anti-virus was successful (or so it told me anyway).

I proceeded to find the 3 files listed above in my c:\windows and c:\windows\system32 folders, and remove them. The good thing is that I stopped receiving anti-virus warnings. The bad thing is that Internet Explorer is now broken. It launches, but won't do anything. I installed Firefox, and it works fine. However, when I reboot I receive a RUN DLL start-up error (after Windows launches) stating that I'm missing dll32.dll . I'm not sure if this is the virus trying to use the .dll file it installed, or something I removed and shouldn't have. What do you guys think?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
