I think I've picked up at least one infection (supekede according to Prevx CSI scan) on an old PC. Symmtoms include very slow performance, IE6 windows popping up unexpectedly, lots od hard disk churning, and system instability.

(We have a similar infection on our main computer, but that's a separate issue.)

As directed by DaChew, here is the HJT log I just ran:

I don't mean to be pushy, but since this topic is buried on page 10 and there has been no response, I'm hoping this reply will bump it bak into visibility.

Hope this doesn't violate site protocol.

When my number is called and someone is ready to help me with this, do not start analyzing the earlier HJT file. I want to add a new one at that time, just in case I've made changes in my attempts to clean the computer.

Thanks.

Hello Dave Rollins,

Posted Image

Sorry about the delay.:) If you still need help, please post a new HijackThis log to make sure nothing has changed, and I'll be happy to look at it for you. Please understand that on an older computer like this we don't have access to as many tools, since this system is no longer supported. I will do the best I can, and get you fixed up. :thumbup2:

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop.

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
Thanks,
tea

It was interesting that most of the few infections it identified were related to ComboFix. Could be a false-positive, but kind of alarming nonetheless.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello,

Er.....you ran ComboFix on this system? :thumbup2: Yes, what Dr. Web picked up as far as that goes is definitely false positive. A lot of AVs do that because of the way ComboFix is made.

Are you still getting the same symptoms you were originally? Also, since you ran it, do you still have the report ComboFix made? If so, I'd love to see it, please. Should be interesting. :)

Thanks,
tea

In looking around the site before posting my request for help, I noticed that it was often used, so I downloaded it to have it handy. If I remember correctly, I found a suggestion to run ComboFix in my early wanderings around the site. That log is gone; removed by DrWeb CureIt, I believe. Do you want me to rerun ComboFix?

Yes, I'm still experiencing the same symptoms, plus one other I forgot to mention - automatic updates (such as updating things like virus defs or SpyBot defs) are failing, as if a virus is intentionally blocking them.

NO! Please delete ComboFix and Qoobox......it should not have been run on this, which is why I was curious as to the outcome.

Download Silent Runners.zip and extract it to a new folder on your Desktop.
  • Run the Silent Runners.vbs file.
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO."
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run.
  • This script is not malicious so please allow it.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.
Thanks,

Hi Dave,

Are both computers networked together? Do you use a router?

When we upgraded to FIOS, that resultd in a wireless netowrk, so I guess it's correct that both PCs are on the same network. We don't use the network to transfer files between the two, although it's common for me to take files from on PC to the other via a Flash drive.

The Windows Me machine is plugged directly into the router. The XP machine connects wirelessly via a USB device.

HHmmmmm........then let's try from 2 different angles here. Unplug the router from the ME and reset it to default settings, then put a username and password on it. While you're at it, check and see if the problems persist even without the modem plugged in. On the XP machine, plug in the flash drive you use between the two and run ComboFix. The flash may be infected. I really would like to see a ComboFix report from the XP system, as I asked you for in the other thread.

Let me know how you come out. :thumbup2:

Thanks,
tea
