Two months ago, I had a strange event begin to happen: explorer.exe would crash, restart, then crash again...all in the span of a few seconds. It would do this over and over again, despite system restarts, etc. After a half-hour of browsing online, I found someone who had run into the same problem, and ComboFix was recommended. I downloaded ComboFix, ran it, and voila! the problem was solved. Explorer was no longer crashing and everything went back to normal.

A few hours ago, Explorer began crashing again. I was away from my computer for about three or four hours, so I am not too sure when it began to happen again. All I know is that when I left my PC, the explorer problem was not happening. But when I got back, like an annoying friend I had hoped to never see again, I realized that explorer was crashing over and over again. So, this time being prepared, I fired up ComboFix to let it do its magic. I watched as it went through all the steps and noticed that at step 30, a message popped up saying:

"Deleted C:\Windows\System32\idlrk.dll"

ComboFix finished the scanning and restarted the computer. After I logged back on, ComboFix started right back up again, as usual. However, instead of the dialog I saw the first time, talking about creating the log, ComboFix was outputting some sort of error message about being denied the right to remove idlrk.dll. I was going to take a screen shot of it, but did not get the chance; a BSoD occurred, and I had to restart the PC.

The "technical information" I got from the BSoD was this:

STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0xFBF37DA0, 0xFBE37F14, 0xE0C9E97C)

I tried it a second time, with the same results. ComboFix managed to fix the problem of explorer crashing (for now), but I have even bigger problems now. First and foremost, the PC is acting very strange: I cannot access certain parts of the Registry, telling me I have no permissions to do so, I cannot install AVG 8 because of those registry restrictions, and (though this is hardly a huge deal) the system clock is still stuck on 24-hour time. I'm worried that because ComboFix did not get to finish properly, that my computer may be stuck in some kind of limbo...and "idlrk.dll" is still there to boot.

Anyway, below is my DDS.txt information and I'll be attaching the required Attach.txt to this well. Thanks for any help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hey KoanYorel,

Thanks for getting back with me. I have actually resolved the situation, though in a different way. I did somehow manage to get explorer.exe to stop crashing on me, but the next day I decided to upgrade to Windows Vista, so I am not dealing with this problem anymore. But thank you anyway.
