Hi, My laptop has been infected with the av2009.
I can't login to the start page, it just auto logs out, even in safe mode. The best I can do is boot up (F12) using the reinstall /recovery disk from the d: drive. Is there a way to clean the registry to be able to get to my start page to start the removal progress? Or can I remove this virus the old fashion way in dos? I'm running windows xp home version

Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive, and then restart the computer. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

Type: chkdsk /r

It's important to have a space before the "/".

To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Thank you for the help... Ok I followed the recommand actions, it went through and indicated it found and recovered /repaired some files it did not provide a list. After the first try it still didn't let me login to the start page, so I went through the process two more times but it still didn't let me login.

Is there something more going on here than just the av2009 virus or do I need to go through the process more times?

Boot into the Recovery Console and type these three commands one after the other:

cd system32
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
exit

Again thanks for the help, just so you know. I only have access to my work computer so my replies will generally be the following day. And since its Friday it may be Monday before I can get back to you. So if you can give me mulitple things to try over the weekend that would be most appreicated.

Anyhow, I typed in the three commands from the recovery console, the first command changed the dir to system 32 as you would thing, on the second command, the system return this message, "system cannot find the file specified." after typing exit ,the system booted into windows however, it still would not allow me to log into my start page. It again logged me out immediately. I just guessing but there must be a command in the regisitry that auto logs me out?

Some additional back ground when this first occurred, I downloaded what I thought was free anit spyware "MS AnitVirus 2009" at first it was all the pop ups and warnings my system was infected, I immediately realize I had my a big mistake and uninstalled it from the control panel and rebooted the computer this is when I received the blue screen, I shutdown, upon boot back up this is when I was no longer able to log in.

d:
cd i386
expand userinit.ex_ c:\windows\system32
exit

 PROGRESS!!! and some unexpected malware, Ok so the last commands you gave me worked. I was able to log into my start page, so thank you very much for your help so far.

After loging on I immedaitly noticed a software icon on my desktop, "CyberDefender" spyware/virus protection. I went to the control panel, as I knew I hadn't downloaded this. I tried to uninstall and as I suspected it would not let me. I attempted to to use Internet Explorer, it appears to be completly controled by this malware program, I could not go to this site and wasn't able download anything like StopZilla to try and get rid of it. So I did some investigating and found some configuration files for "Cyber Defender" It would not let me email it, so let me know and I can type it out manually. I then just disconnect form the net shut everything down.

Anyway, at this point how do I get rid of this malware "CyberDefender" Also running task manager I did not find any thing that looked like Av2009 and there wasn't anything in my program files, just "CyberDefender"... :flowers:

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
