I was having a ton of pop-ups open when IE was started, so I scanned my computer with Norton, but it didn't find any infection. I found Trend Micro's Housecall online and downloaded their Internet Security. I ran Trend Micro's Housecall which detected MAL_VUNDO_5 but could not fix or remove the virus. After searching on the internet I used Malware Bytes' Anti-Malware program to remove it. Malware Bytes' seems to have cleaned my computer. Trend Micro didn't find any infection afterwards.

When I open IE or Firefox while having a start-up site listed, both hang and stop responding. The only way I've been able to use IE is to set the default homepage to a blank window. I thought the problem might be with IE, so I installed IE 8.0. This seemed to help, but after opening IE several times, the problem repeated itself.

I'm not sure if I've completely gotten rid of VUNDO or if there is another problem? I would greatly appreciate any help!! Thanks!

Here is my DDS.txt log:

Hi thedarkswan,

Welcome to the BleepingComputer forums.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for assistance. Every one of our team members is a volunteer and unfortunately, there are often just not enough to keep up with demand. Thank you so much for your patience.

If your issue has been resolved or you have received help elsewhere, please post a reply here and let us know so that we can close this thread.

If you still need assistance, my name is SpotCheckBilly (SCB for short) and I will be happy to help you.

===Very Important===

The instructions in this thread have been specifically designed for THIS USER'S MACHINE ONLY . You should not use these instructions to clean your machine. Doing so could cause irreparable damage to your machine. If you need assistance, please start your own thread.

=================

A few things which will make our fix go more smoothly.
  • Please >> DO NOT<< run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to.
  • Please DO NOT install any software while we are working.
  • Please Do not skip any steps. With some infections skipping a step can be disastrous.
  • If there is something you don't understand or or are unsure of -- please stop and take a moment to ask about it.
  • If you are running P2P filesharing program(s). My recommendation is you uninstall it/them.
  • Remove any cracked/pirated software. I will immediately stop helping you if I discover any.
The most important thing to remember is to be patient. Very seldom can we remove the entire infection in one go. Many of today's infections install other infections and for the most part they do not like to go quietly. :)

Please reply to this thread and let me know whether or not you still need help. -- SCB :thumbup2:

Hi thedarkswan,

OK, let's see if we can get to the bottom of this.

Please click Here to download HJTInstall.exe.
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • Click Install.
  • By default program will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • HijackThis (HJT) will launch.
  • Close any/all browsers, messenger, mediaplayer, Office and mail client windows and applications.
  • Click Do a system scan and save a logfile
  • When the scan is finished, a Notepad window will open containing the contents.
  • Save the log file to your desktop.
I would like to see the contents of your original MBAM scan. You can find it by doing the following:
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click the Logs tab.
  • Double-click log-mm.dd.yyyy [xxxxxx].txt.
Finally, please update MBAM and rescan to make sure nothing got left behind.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

In your next post, please include:
  • The contents of your HijackThis log.
  • The contents of your original Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan.
  • The results of your new Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan.
This should give us enough information to get us started. -- SCB :thumbup2:

Hi thedarkswan,

Thanks for the logs. It looks like there is something still lurking in your machine. The second MBAM scan showed a new Vundo file which wasn't there before. Let's see if we can power that thing into submission.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
A word of warning: Please DO NOT run ComboFix on your own. Used incorrectly, it can render your computer completely useless

>>>If you already have Combofix, delete previous copy(s) and download the latest version.<<<

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before continuing the scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and may cause unpredictable results. Note: Combofix will disconnect you from the Internet, then restore your connection as it finishes.

Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***
The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.
  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

***If you have an always on Internet connection, unplug from your DSL/cable modem before proceeding. Reconnect only after Combofix has finished its scan.***
  • Click on Yes, to allow Combofix to finish its scan. This can take a while, so please be patient.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you at C:\ComboFix.txt.
***Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall***

In your next post, please include
  • A new Hijackthis log.
  • C.:\Combofix.txt.
***use separate posts if necessary to ensure the logs don't get cut off!***

Thanks. -- SCB :thumbup2:
