Hi,
This infection is on a PC runing windows XP. Have scanned the computer with Trend micro Office Scan several times, it finds an infection called "Hackingtools_cain" with registry values HKCR\Software\Cryon\ and HKLM\Software\Classes\Software\Cryon, but crashes halfway through the scan, so infection cannot be removed. In case it is relevant, this is the error message when Office Scan crashes:

"Windows - NoDisk" Exception Proccessing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bF7c 4 75b6b7c 75b6b7c

Have scanned three times with trend micro house call, which found and cleaned infections the first two times, then after the third scan found nothing. Scanning again with office scan however, still found the same infection. Here is the Kapersky scan results, DDS log and attachment. Help Please!

Update: downloaded a free trial of Kapersky antivirus which then removed the following items:

24/03/2009 1:11:08 PM Detected: Packed.Win32.NSAnti.r c:\WINDOWS\Temp\qsp3A4.tmp/CryptFF
24/03/2009 1:11:13 PM Deleted: Packed.Win32.NSAnti.r c:\WINDOWS\Temp\qsp3a4.tmp
24/03/2009 1:11:13 PM Detected: Packed.Win32.NSAnti.r c:\WINDOWS\Temp\qsp90B.tmp/CryptFF
24/03/2009 1:11:13 PM Deleted: Packed.Win32.NSAnti.r c:\WINDOWS\Temp\qsp90b.tmp

Anyway after doing this reinstalled Trend Micro Office Scan which again could not finish because of the following error message:

"Windows - NoDisk" Exception Proccessing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bF7c 4 75b6b7c 75b6b7c

On the other hand, the scan did not detect the Hackingtools_Cain registry entries as it had previously. So Maybe this is not just a malware problem, but I would appreciate any input!

Here is the full log of the Kapersky scan:

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums.

Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Please post the contents of log.txt.
Thank you for your patience.

Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so.

While we are working on your HijackThis log, please:
  • Reply to this thread; do not start another!
  • Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so.
  • Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
  • Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work.
  • Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix.
  • Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix.
  • Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.
Thanks.

Hi, sorry about the delay, was making sure computer was fully backed up before proceeding. As mentioned above, the main problem now is that the installed Trend Micro Office Scan antivirus program cannot complete a full scan- it crashes half way through displaying the following error message

"Windows - NoDisk" Exception Proccessing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bF7c 4 75b6b7c 75b6b7c

Also the web- browsers are slowed down somewhat. So not sure if it is malware related or not, but would appreciate if you could check it out. In addition to the log.txt I have also pasted the info.txt file created by RSIT (at the end of this post.) Thank You!!!

Also not sure if this is related or not, some of the text in internet explorer address bar appears as a kind of faded grey colour, with the rest in normal black type. A little strange.

Is this a business/institution computer?
If it is, are you the domain administrator? If you are not, have you informed your domain administrator, (business manager, Systems Analyst, or Information Technology (IT) Specialist)?

I ask because I do not HELP remove malware from any of the Windows Server editions, like Windows 2003. I do not help in cleaning business or corporate or institution related computers for several reasons:
  • There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware.
  • Any infection could jump terminals in a computer network.
  • There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that I do not wish to deal with.
  • Some people who come here use their computers for work, and the computers may contain the patient records of a physician or the financial records of an accountant's clients or credit card and bank account information of their employer's customers.
  • There may be tremendous risks and legal liability for such users for not fully securing the computer. We will not know this unless we ask. We do not want to be accidentally putting those we help in vulnerable positions for law suits.
  • Business factors outweigh technical factors in making the reformat and reinstall decision. Sometimes friends give missing CDs or lack of expertise as a reason for not doing a reformat and reinstall.
  • The cost of replacing missing Windows XP and MS Office CDs and getting an Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer to come in for 3 hours to do the reinstall and apply all the critical updates, is trivial compared with the potential cost of a multi-million dollar lawsuit for breach of trust if confidential client or patient information is disclosed.
  • In specific situations where highly confidential information about others is on the computer, and a backdoor virus or trojan is found, we are helping people more by identifying that they have a backdoor trojan which puts them in a particularly vulnerable situation and sending them to seek local professional help from a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or Certified Information Systems Security Professional or Global Information Assurance Certification Certified Security Expert or Certified Computing Professional or Internet Service Provider than we would be trying to fully resolve their problems long distance.

You don't stop laughing when you get old; you get old when you stop laughing.

I suppose this is an in-between situation- it's a computer in a university laboratory, so it is connected to a university network, but we do most of the maintenance ourselves (as postgraduate researchers). We would rather attempt malware removal than doing a full reinstall, as there are many programs and settings that would have to be reinstalled, and we would have to do this ourselves. We have no sensitive information other than scientific data that we have backed up, so no legal issues should be involved. The departmental computer maintenance guy had a quick look at it, but wasn't able to help, this is why I posted it to this forum. We could ask him to take another look at it before proceeding here, would that meet your requirements for helping us? (we would then be here as a final resort before reinstallation.)

Help Please!

Hacking tools are programs that generally crack or break computer and network security measures. Hacking tools have different capabilities depending on the systems they have been designed to penetrate. System administrators have been known to use similar tools - if not the same programs - to test security and identify possible avenues for intrusion.

Did you install this program or did someone else install it? It may have been installed by a System Administrator. Either way, I will not work on this computer with this program installed. You need to get your System Administrator to help you.

Hackingtools_cain - This grayware is an installer of a hacking tool, Cain & Abel v2.8. Cain & Abel. Cain & Abel is a free, fast and effective Windows password recovery tool. Unlike Ophcrack, Cain & Abel is a more traditional software application and does require access to Windows under a particular user account. Due to this fact, Cain & Abel is often a valuable resource to recover passwords to accounts other than the one you are using, including the administrator account.

Cain & Abel should only be used by more experienced users because of its more complicated setup and other advanced features. It also has the following capabilities:
retrieve passwords
sniffing through Networks
password decoder
retrieve usernames and passwords in SQL and Oracle servers
remote console
remote registry
dump LSA secrets
hash calculator
wireless password dumper
remote desktop password decoder
get processor information
RSA SecurID Token Calculator

Hi,
nobody seems to be aware of installing this or any other hacking programs on this pc. After running a free trial of kapersky antivirus, trend micro office scan now no longer finds this infection. The uncertainty is that since the complete scan never gets to the finish, we cannot be sure that everything has been removed, although on all previous scans (there were many) the hackingtools_cain entry was always detected, even though the scan did not go to completion.

Here again is the logfile of the Kapersky scan- it found and removed something called CryptFF which may have been quarantined who knows when by a previous installation of Norton antivirus. Is there any quick way you know of to tell if we still have "cain" on our system?

If the scan does not complete, it would be unwise for you to think that the infection is gone. Try doing online scans. In Normal Mode, run an online malware check from at least two and preferably three (one may catch something that another one may not) of the following sites
BitDefender
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner
McAfee FreeScan
Panda's ActiveScan
Trend Micro™ HouseCall
Windows Live Safety Center Free Online Scan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan

Again, you need to work with your System Administrator. I cannot help you.

Ok thank you, will try those scans and talk to the system administrator again. Can I get back to you if we have more questions?
