Hi there. While doing some internet banking recently, I noticed that after submitting my usual log in details (on the genuine bank website) I was taken to a page asking me for information that wouldn't normally be requested (e.g. 16 digit card number, ATM pin etc). I was pretty certain this was a phishing attempt and so I shut down the window. Subsequent attempts have shown this wasn't a one off, and I have also noticed a pop up window sometimes which is masquerading as a "verified by visa" window, also asking for the same details. From a google search, I've noticed I am not alone to suffer this and the general feedback is that this is caused by a trojan. The bank have confirmed that they definitely do not ask for such information and that this is fraudulent.

The problem only arises when using Internet Explorer - Firefox works fine. I've also noticed that Internet Explorer has been very temperamental over the last couple of months (such that I was using Firefox exclusively over this period - the first time I managed to get IE to work, I noticed this problem). By temperamental, I mean that when I try and launch it, I just get a blank white screen with an hour glass - it never connects to a web page. I eventually solved this by using the Reset button under Tools/Options/Advanced.

I've tried running AVG, malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy (in normal and in safe mode) but they don't seem to have fixed the problem.

For information, I am using Windows XP.

I initially looked for help in the "Am I infected - what do I do?" forum. Despite following various steps there, I was recommended to come in here for additional help. You can read the stages we went through from this link:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/212076/phishing-attempts-while-using-internet-banking-possible-trojan/

Any help much appreciated!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums.

Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Please post the contents of log.txt.
Thank you for your patience.

Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so.

While we are working on your HijackThis log, please:
  • Reply to this thread; do not start another!
  • Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so.
  • Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
  • Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work.
  • Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix.
  • Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix.
  • Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.
Thanks.

I have some bad news for you.

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] wkssvr.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

The entries above indicate your computer may be infected with backdoor trojans. Rootkits, backdoor Trojans, Botnets, and IRCBots are very dangerous because they use advanced techniques (backdoors) as a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information which they send back to the hacker. These trojans leave a backdoor open on the system that can allow hacker total and complete access to your computer. Backdoor trojans send your identity information to a third party who may use that information for their own purposes such as identity theft, stolen bank funds, stealing credit card information etc. Hackers can operate your computer just as if he were sitting in front of it. Hackers can watch everything you are doing on the computer, play tricks, do screenshots, log passwords, start and stop programs.

There are so many changes that could have been done if that backdoor was used. Even if we cleaned the infections, it would not help to recover the information that has been compromised and there is no guarantee that your computer would be safe to use. Some infections are difficult to remove completely because of their morphing characteristics which allows the malware to regenerate itself. Sometimes there is another hidden piece of malware which has not been detected by your security tools that protects malicious files and registry keys (which have been detected) so they cannot be permanently deleted.

I advise you to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you do not mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).
  • Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.
Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Most experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS).

Posted Image I recommend backing up your important files and reinstalling everything from scratch.

Oh dear, I thought it might be bad - but not that bad! The computer is almost 6 years old anyway so time to think abuot an upgrade I guess.

For the avoidance of doubt can you confirm if my password details could be stolen if I have been entering them using Firefox? I'm not planning on ignoring this, I just need to know whether I need to sort this out today or over the next few days!

I don't know how long this has been on my computer (I am guessing ever since IE started playing up around Christmas time) but nothing has gone missing so far from any of my bank accounts *touch wood*.

Actually, now I come to think of it, over the last few months somebody has applied for a credit card using my identity details and someone has cloned my credit card. Thankfully both attempts were spotted by the credit card companies concerned. I guess this isn't a coincidence.

No, it is not a coincidence. I advise taking care of this today.
