Over the last two days, we seem to be infected with a Malware that is attempting to get us to install VirusRemover2009 from a site called http//advancesoftwaretool.com. I have 2 computers, but only one has this problem. From the infected computer, I can usually connect to my home page (Google), but then this software seem to hijack every attempt to go to a new page and redirect me to a webpage that contains articles about PC protection. I also get periodic pop-ups asking me to install VirusRemover2009.

I've attached the DDS and Attach files.

Thanks
Clarke

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K

The only thing that has changed from my prior posting is that I have used Norton Antivirus to delete 4 viruses from Quarantine. Now, my Google inquiries are not automatically directed to a site describing Spyware, but I am still getting pop-ups asking me to download VirusRemover2009

Here is the DDS file from today, after I deleted the viruses.

I will post back soon with my first fix for you.

You have a VERY serious infection known as a backdoor rootkit. Rootkits are specialist programs designed to patch the Windows kernel with the intention of hiding themselves from Windows.
What does this mean? Rootkits hide files. And really good rootkits hide really bad files.

We do have tools to detect rootkits, but the problem with these is that they still require Windows to operate, and an exceptionally advanced rootkit might therefor have patched the Windows kernel in such a way that even our specialist tools are fooled - because in the end, they're nothing more than kernel-privileged (= highest permissions possible) applications.

Don't worry - most rootkits don't exhibit this type of behaviour. They only patch the userland mode - which means that normal programs such as Windows Explorer will not detect them, but higher privileged kernel programs will.

However, we have also identified a small number of kernel rootkits. They completely patch the kernel, which is, in fact, the very essence of Windows. So they can potentially fool every scanner we have because of there high privileges.

Because of these functions, you should consider reformatting and reinstalling the operating system.

The thing is, Windows is now lying to you. And we can never be sure how deep this goes. Not all rootkits can be detected. Every rootkit can and will impair your computer's normal behaviour and stability, one way or another. We can somehow detect rootkits, but as all rootkit detectors need Windows to operate, we can't be sure they're not being lied to as well.

In any case involving rootkits, I cannot guarantee anything. The best course of action would be reformatting and reinstalling the operating system.

Let me know how you wish to proceed.

Just to clarify if I understand you correctly and we were to try to fix the problem without reformatting my sytem, the following could happen:

- we could fix the problem, the computer would go back to normal
- we might not be able to detect all of the problem files, thus we could not fix the system without a reformat.

What is the worst that could happen if we first try to fix the system without a reformatting?

What is involved in reformatting my disk space? I'm hesitating a little on this option, because I suspect that you will ask me to find the CD/DVD that came with the computer when we bought it new, and I do't know where to look at the moment.

Thanks

It's not dangerous to try and remove it, it's just that we never know if all of it is removed. There is no way for me to know that I have removed everything so there is no way for me to be sure that you are all clean.

Yes, you will need the OS recovery/install disk to do this. If you can find it, this will be the best option and I highly recommend reformatting.

Lets try cleaning the problem, as I still haven't found the original disks to the infected Sony computer (Microsoft XP). I've found the original disks for our older Dell computer (Micosoft Office 97).

So, I guess we clean as much as we can. If I understand correctly and the problems do not come back, then we are good to go. If we are unknowingly unable to clean all the files, then I presume the same problems I'm having now will persist. At that point, my options are:

- remove Microsoft XP, reformat, and install Microsoft 97 from my disks?
- purchase a new operating system to install?
- but new computer?
- live without using internet on Sony computer?

So, unless I am off base on my assumptions, lets try to clean the Sony first.

Thanks
Clarke

Lets try cleaning the problem, as I still haven't found the original disks to the infected Sony computer (Microsoft XP). I've found the original disks for our older Dell computer (Micosoft Office 97).

We can attempt to clean it if you wish.

So, I guess we clean as much as we can. If I understand correctly and the problems do not come back, then we are good to go.

This is not true. The problems may or may not come back but there is no way for me to know if you are still infected. There could be no symptoms, you could have no problems at all with anything on the computer and not even know that it is infected and someone is stealing all of the info being entered with the system.

- remove Microsoft XP, reformat, and install Microsoft 97 from my disks?

Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows are 2 completely different things. Microsoft office is word, excel, powerpoint and those applications that run on Windows. Windows is the actual operating system and that would be the CD that you would need to find.

- purchase a new operating system to install?

You could do this, but it would be quite expensive. It will be around $90 for the OS, possibly less if you find one on eBay or similar.

- but new computer?

Another option that is plausible, but up to you.

- live without using internet on Sony computer?

I guess you could do this if you wanted to, I wouldn't recommend it however.

So, unless I am off base on my assumptions, lets try to clean the Sony first.

If after reading this, you decide you still want to clean it then please follow these steps:

Download HijackThis
  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your desktop and run it.
  • Following the on-screen prompts.
  • After the installation has finished, browse to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro
  • Now start HijackThis.
  • Click Do a system scan and save a log file.
  • Post the log file here. (Notepad will automatically open with the log file once HijackThis! has finished scanning). Do not attach the log file.
Please also post a new DDS log.

Adam

Adam

I can't find the original disks for my Windows XP, so what are my options as far as removing, reformatting, and reinstalling the system? I'm still willing to try it is there is a way to do it.

Hi Clarke, extremely sorry about the late reply.

Download and Run ComboFix
Please visit this page to download and run Combofix - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. You will see the following message if Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is not installed.

    Posted Image

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, a log will be produced. Please post this log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Post the combofix log and a new HijackThis log.

Adam

I have run the ComboFix and HijackThis files. Even after running these files and rebooting the computer, I can't connect to the internet from the infected Sony, either using Internet Explorer or FireFox, but the ComboFix routine did connect to the Microsoft site to download its data.

There is another Malware that is happening. While Booting-up, I get an icon that says it is from "Solution Center" and it is trying to load a program. I usually can get out of this by hitting Cancel 3 times.

Here is the ComboFix log:

OK, I followed your instructions. When I Went into Firefox>Options>Advanced>Network I saw the words No Proxy, but there was no radio button to select that was associated with it. The proxy server was set to 7171, not unlike the file name that you had me delete earlier. Anyway, I selected the option "Direct Connection to Internet". AT first, I could not connect to the internet, but after clicking on "Repair the connection", I can access the internet on both Firefox and IExplorer.

I'm guessing that my original disks are gone, we have not found them. Do I have other options other than buying a new operating system or new computer?

Here is the GMER file
