This is my post in the "Am i Infected" forum http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/212468/i-think-i-have-a-virus/

I will redescribe my problem

The computer starts up normally until i log into an account. At that point i have a black background with a smaller grey rectangle in the middle.
In the small grey rectangle it says
Warning(in flashing red letters)
dangerous spyware
many viruses were found on your computer such as :trojan horse,
passcapture, etc.
Your personal information can call into in the "third hands"
please check up the computer with a special sofware.
thank

Thats the entire message exactly as it appears

I have a red circle with a white x on the my tray in the bottom right corner of my screen that pops up security messages saying i have a virus and need to buy some software. Clicking on the balloons that come up takes me to a website for antivirus xp pro. It goes without saying that i didnt buy anything.
e v
Also on startup my documents opens automatically.

I tried to install malwarebytes and spybot and neither will load. Spybot said it installed but it will not run

The virus has disabled task manager so i downloaded proexp.exe i deleted everything. Most of it i could see what it was however this file
frmwrk32.exe and a subfolder
ntdll64.exe

Stopping the process tree on kills red circle with the white x as well the balloons that pop up saying i need to buy their antivirus software. However i am still not able to open malwarebytes, even with nothing running under the explored tab. I downloaded the dss utility and here is that info. If u can of any help i would greatly appreciate it. thank you

Hi

My name is Extremeboy (or EB for short), and I will be helping you with your log.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will need to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the Posted Image button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic. The topics you are tracking can be found here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

Post back with:
-Combofix log
-New Hijackthis log
-Description of any problem you still have

With Regards,
Extremeboy

No problem. Thanks for letting me know.

It's right now 6:35 PM for me so I will need to go to bed in another 3-4 hours and also I have to leave to a meeting with someone else in another hour so I will probably review the log tomorrow evening. Thanks for understanding.

Sorry again for the delay. I spent an hour last night and two hours this morning trying to run both combofix and hijack this, with no success. I can click on the icons and i get the hourglass symbol for maybe 5 to 10 seconds and then it just goes back to the point. I looked in the proexp.exe psuedo task manager, and both programs appear to be running, but with no representation on my screen. Also, everytime i try to start one of them, i get a browser page that pops up and says page cannot load. Since i have no other options available to me right now, i went ahead and ran another dds log. This is with both combofix and hijack this running.

UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.
IF REQUESTED, ZIP IT UP & ATTACH IT

Hello.

Could you run Malwarebytes for me. You probably can't install it and run it normally, so see if you can update and run it manually. Let me know if it works.

Download and Run MBAM (Update Manually)

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your working clean computer's desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • Exit Malwarebytes Anti-Malware now.
---------------------------------------------------------
  • Now Copy the definitions (rules.ref) located at "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" for XP and "C:\Documents and Settings\Users\All Users\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" for Vista
  • Paste rules.ref to a USB stick or CD and transfer that file to the infected machine.
  • Copy rules.ref to the location indicated for your operating system. If you cannot see the folder, then you may have to Reconfigure Windows to show it.
  • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <- Copy it to this folder. Overwrite it if exists already.
  • Vista: C:\Documents and Settings\Users\All Users\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <-Copy it to this folder. Overwrite it if exists already.
---------------------------------------------------------
  • Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on your infected machine now.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

For complete or visual instructions on installing and running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware please read this link

Now run Combofix this time it will be DIFFERENT. (Even if MBAM doesn't work try the following, just let me know if MBAM doesn't work).

Download and Run ComboFix (Rename Before Saving)

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Refer to the page below for further instructions on running ComboFix. This includes installing the Recovery Console. Note that you do not need your Windows XP disk to install it. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, it will produce a open a report for you. Post back with it. It is at C:\ComboFix.txt.

Do not mouseclick the ComboFix window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Hello.

The rootkit was removed. However, you should be warned about this infection.

Posted ImageBackdoor Threat

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unfortunatly One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. If you wish to continue do the steps below

The recovery Console was NOT installed. It must be installed in order for Combofix to fix the infected userinit.exe if there is a clean copy on your machine.

Do the following.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System.

Posted Image

Download the file and save it as it's originally named onto your desktop.
Posted Image
Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • At the next prompt, click Yes to run the full ComboFix scan.

    Posted Image
  • Please post back the C:\ComboFix.txt that will open on reboot.
Post back with:
-Combofix log

With regards,
Extremeboy

eb-
I appreciate the heads up on the backdoor trojan. I'll think we'll get it all clean and well see how it goes from there. I appreciate the information though. I downloaded the recovery console and this is the log.

Hello.

Okay. Let's remove clear up the rest.

Run ComboFix with CFScript

We will run ComboFix again. This time, the instructions are slightly different.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open notepad (Start>Run>"notepad") and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    FCopy::
    c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\userinit.exe | c:\windows\system32\dllcache\userinit.exe
    c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\userinit.exe | c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe. (This should be your desktop.)
    Posted Image
Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Post back with that log.

Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Once Combofix is done, update MBAM and then run a quick-scan with it.

Post back with:
-Combofix log
-MBAM log

With regards,
Extremeboy

Hello.

Looks good. One thing regarding sites in your trusted zone.

O15 Entries Warning (Sites in your Trusted Zones)

The reason why I say it's not a good idea is because the security settings for the internet is not extremely high and once you put a site in your trusted zone, basically almost anymore or thing, including hackers or other malicious software have full access to that site which can lead to hijacking that site and may even have access to your computer. Are you sure you trust a site to that degree?

It is recommended NOT to have ANY sites in your Trusted Zone unless the site requires it to function properly and you trust it very well. Other than that, it is not necessary for you to add any sites into the trusted zone. If you're not sure, and/or you do not need these in your trusted zone to facilitate access or you did not knowingly permit this access yourself, then please remove those sites from your trusted zone.

They can be accessed in the Internet via Tools>>Internet Options>>Security>>Trusted Zone>>Sites. Remove if there are any there.

We need update Java and run an online scan and see if there's anything else.

Update Java to Version 6 Update 12

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 13.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
*If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
** If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
*** The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Run Scan with Kaspersky

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. Please note: Kaspersky requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) be installed before scanning for malware, as ActiveX is no longer being used.)

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Please disable your realtime protection software before proceeding. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open the Kaspersky WebScanner
    page.
  • Click on the Posted Image button on the main page.
  • The program will launch and fill in the Information section on the left.
  • Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press the Posted Image button.
  • The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files. It may take a while so please be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the files have been downloaded, click on the Posted Image ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the Posted Image button, if you made any changes.
  • Now under the Scan section on the left:

    Select My Computer
  • The program will now start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

Post back with a pair of new DDS logs as well.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
