why won't my laptop work?

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around

Touchpad actually, and to be more specific, when I have any keyboard input, my touchpad locks up for a few seconds then I regain control.

I am having the same problem but my system is a desktop. From a fresh boot everything seems to work fine.
I open MS Word and try typing, at that point the mouse locks up and nothing has been typed. I have to reboot to get my system back.

Have you tried removing/uninstalling the touchpad drivers/software...and then reinstalling same?

Same for mouse if it uses drivers/software other than those provided by XP.
