Hi - I believe that I have a version of the Vundo virus and cannot get rid of it. I have McAfee antivirus and Spybot. Spybot was not updated until recently. I have tried to use Spybot to remove but it keeps coming back. McAfee tries to block it but still persists. My computer is now running very slowly. I get messages from Spybot warning about Rundll32.exe being changed at startup. I run XP Home. Can someone more competent than me please interpret the logs and provide some next steps to remove this? Thank you very much!. (PS, I posted this incorrectly 2 min earlier elsewhere and have stopped that thread)

Below are two logs: first is the hijackthis log then a partial view of the Spybot log. I also attached a registry change spybot notice in a word file.

Hello Competent :thumbup2: Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest to you while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Please perform the following:

Do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

When completed please both both logs fromRSIT as well as the one from Kaspersky.

Thanks,

Thewall -

Thank you very much for your help.

I have attached three things: 1) Kaspersky results; 2) RSIT results; 3) malwarebytes log. I was not sure how long it would take to move foward, so I was in the process of running malwarebytes when I saw your post. I have NOT used it to make any changes to registry, etc (but I am trying to follow instructions!). I just attached it for informational purposes since it was already done. No actions were taken. I posted and attached the 4 log files as txt files as well. I am ready for next steps and will try to proceed promptly. Thanks again!

Hello again, :thumbup2:

Here's what we need to do:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

SPYBOT TEATIMER
  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

Launch your MalwareBytes and check for updates. After updating check Perform Full Scan and run the program.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

We need to update both your Adobe Reader and Java. Both of these can be sources of Malware exploitation when they are outdated so make sure you remove all older versions.

Please uninstall older version of Adobe Reader before installing the latest version

* Click Start
* Control Panel
* Double clicking on Add/Remove Programs
* Locate older version of Adobe Reader and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it
* Click HERE to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
* Select your Windows version and click onDownload. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you. If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
* Close your Internet browser and open it again.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 12.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

When completed please provide both the MBAM log and a new RSIT log. RSIT will produce only one log this time. There is no need to do any attachments.

Reason for edit: Add in more instructions for MBAM

Thewall -

Thanks for your response. I have followed the steps you indicated. A few things did not go exactly as your directions, but there seems to be improvement and no random popups and no extreme slowness. There may be some more steps, but we are moving in the right direction. The logs are included at the end.

A few things:
1) Your instruction for Spybot: Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List; Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts. THIS WAS NOT AVAILABLE. I was able to do the first part of unchecking Resident Teatimer, but not the second part.

2) The Adobe reinstall failed for some reason. I rebooted and then tried 5 or 6 times, rebooting each time. I will try to resolve that now by another uninstall and reinstall. See attached screenshot.

Below are the logs. I look forward to your thoughts on next steps. Thanks again!

Good job with the Adobe :thumbup2: , I'll keep what you found out in mind for the future.

What you did with TeaTimer worked. We just needed to get it stopped because it will oftentimes interfere with changes we are trying to make, although it is a good program to have.

There are some files still showing up in the 30 day list and we want to see if they are still there and have you remove them if they are.

Go to Start > My Computer
Go to Tools > Folder Options
Click on the View tab
Untick the following:
  • Hide extensions for known file types
  • Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
You will get a message warning you about showing protected operating system files, click Yes
Make sure this option is selected:
  • Show hidden files and folders
Click Apply and then click OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\yaheteda.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wurubawu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wavokeju.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sajopolu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dasofupu.dll

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\badfile.dll
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop. Or click on the Windows KEY + E.
Double click on Local Disc (C:\)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on badfile.dll and then from the menu that appears, click on Delete

Run HijackThis.
Click on Do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines (if still present).

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02) -
O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

Then close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Reboot your computer

Now do the opposite of what you did above to Hide extensions for known file types and
to Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)

When completed let's run RSIT once again to see if everything looks OK. Also let me know how your computer is running and if you are experiencing any other problems.

Thanks for your help. I found and deleted the 5 dll files. I also fixed the two Hijackthis O16 and O20 files you suggested. The RSIT log is included below.

Performance seems fine... much improved from a few days ago. Assuming that you are satisfied with the log, I guess I only have two remaining questions:
1) Thru this process, things like automatic windows updates are now turned off. Which of those should I toggle back? That one seems obvious, but what else is less obvious that I need to go change?
2) How can I determine other items that I should be deleting from add/remove programs? I obviously know certain applications that I installed intentionally but dont use. What about things like old microsoft service packs, etc. that are harder to recognize as important?

Again, thank you very much for your help.

I'll be out of town today so it may be tomorrow before I have anything else up. At first glance it does seem to be looking much improved.
If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

Due to the large amount of backlogs we have I cannot respond to PMs for help unless I am already working with you

You're more than welcome for the help, I am glad we could be of assistance. :)

In answer to your questions:

Yes you want to definitely turn your Window's updates back on. Also need to check and make sure your firewall and anti-virus is on along with turning TeaTimer back on if you have not already done so.

I really don't see any programs in your Add/Remove that I would suggest you take off from a Malware standpoint. It might be you have some you are no longer using and can remove them if you don't use them. Don't want to be taking off any of the updates for Windows, those should be fine.

Your log now appear to be clean. Good work! :thumbup2:

Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection
You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented
    • Turn System Restore off
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Restart
    • Turn System Restore on
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis
  • Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
  • Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    Click Start > Run
    Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Install SpywareBlaster & make sure to update it regularly
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster from here
  • Make use of the HOSTS file included with Spybot Search & Destroy
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
Spybot Search & Destroy has a good HOSTS file built in, to enable the HOSTS file in Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Run Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Click on Mode, and then place a tick next to Advanced mode
    • Click Yes
    • In the left hand pane of Spybot Search & Destroy, click on Tools, and then on Hosts File
    • Click on Add Spybot-S&D hosts list
Note: On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type services.msc & click OK
    • In the list, find the service called DNS Client & double click on it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click OK & then close the Services window
For a more detailed explanation of the HOSTS file, click here
  • Install a-squared Free & update and scan with it regularly
a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. You can get it here
Note: If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers
  • Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date
