ok well, it started when my son was DLing private servers for some game or another, and my computer locked up for awhile, i managed to get it running, but barely. i did multiple virus scans, disk defrags, and system restores, which did nothing, instead it ended up partioning my hard drive, so now im missing a bunch of resources on 2 files i never use/dont work right(no sound, not enough memory to preform tasks) and i cant figure out how to delete them. i have a hijackthis log -

Hello dakku,

1.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

like no text at all has apeared, its just been sitting at (-) blinking for over an hour.

edit - 1:32 pm MDT - its been running for quite a few hours now and nothing has happened. should i just close it and just do a new HJT log?

Hello dakku,

Rename combofix.exe to something like dakku.exe

i just did that, and this time i got an error message saying "incompatible OS, combofix only works with windows 2000 and XP"
which is odd, because the computer is running windows XP

edit - even with renaming it, its still just running forever with nothing happening

Hello dakku,

lets uninstall combofix and redownload it and rename it before we run it this time

Step 1. Uninstall Combofix
Go to START>RUN> IN the box type:
combofix /u

Make sure there is a space between combofix and /u

Restart your machine.

Step 2.
Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

You will have to uninstall again and it must be renamed Combo-Fix when you reinstall it.
