Unknown device shows root\legacy_npf\0000. Ran Smitfraudfix.exe in Safemode. Computer boots, I get a blue screen and after about two minutes everything loads, and internet works. Homepage was redirected and the HOSTS file was changed. I reset my homepage and using WinPatrol, did not allow the HOSTS change. The HOSTS file appears normal with no changes. The time notifier in the taskbar changed to military time (I changed it back). Unknown device still in Device Manager.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K
The only easy day was yesterday.

Hi Eagleman,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum and sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.
  • Tell me if you have done anything since previous post. Or you have run any other tool. If yes please provide the logs if available.

  • Also tell me how is the current condition of your computer. Please be as detailed as possible, the logs don't tell me what you see when you turn the computer on and work with it.

  • To get an idea about the current condition of you computer download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Set the scan files/folders to 3 Months.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Note 1: If you have difficulty finding the logs, the logs are in this folder: C:\rsit

Note 2: The tool takes not more than one minute to scan the system.
You might want to save this page on your favorites, so you can find it again when you return.

Thank you for responding. I have done nothing to computer since first post except update zonealarm and AVG. All conditions as detailed on first post are the same. One detail I did not mention on my first post is that double-clicking on the desktop shortcuts does not work. However, right clicking on the shortcuts and selecting "open" does work. Here are Random's log and info as requested -

Hi again,

Please do the steps fully and in the order they are written.
  • I see on the log the Coupon Printer for Windows is installed on your computer:
This program is known to be bundled with adware/spyware.

For more information please see this:
    A Closer Look at Coupons.com

To uninstall Coupon Printer for Windows:

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon.
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

    Coupon Printer for Windows

Also delete the folders in bold (if present):

    C:\Program Files\Coupon
    C:\Program Files\Coupons

  • Your version of ZoneAlarm Firewall comes with ZoneAlarm Spyblocker toolbar and this is not highly recommended. See here to find out why.

I recommend you to uninstall ZoneAlarm Spyblocker toolbar:

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon.
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

    ZoneAlarm Spyblocker

  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"
    O2 - BHO: ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker BHO - {F0D4B231-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\ZoneAlarmSB\bar\1.bin\SPYBLOCK.DLL
    O3 - Toolbar: ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker - {F0D4B239-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - C:\Program Files\ZoneAlarmSB\bar\1.bin\SPYBLOCK.DLL

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

  • Reboot your computer now.

  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

  • Please copy and paste a fresh Hijackthis log to your reply.
Please include in your next reply:
  • The Combofix log.
  • A fresh Hijackthis log.
  • Any comment or feedback about how it went.

Thank you for your directives. I performed all your procedures in the order given. Upon reboot, the following occured: 1) The unknown device in device manager is gone! 2) Winpatrol detected a change to IE Search Page to microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch - I said no to this change (this had occured when first "infected" and after using Smitfraud.exe as detailed in my initial topic.) 3) Winpatrol detected a change in the HOSTS file - I rejected this change, again this had occured when first "infected" after using Smitfraud.exe.

Here are the Combofix & Hijackthis logs:

Well done and thanks for the detailed feedback. :thumbup2:

Both the changes reported by WinPatrol are legit and a result of running our fixes.

To make sure of that and also have a full system scan:
  • Either disable WinPatrol or let the changes to take place in order to see if it is malware related.

  • Go to start -> Run -> copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK:

    cmd /c rd /s /q "c:\program files\AskBarDis"

  • Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
    • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 13.
    • Click the Download button to the right.
    • Select your Platform: "Windows".
    • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
    • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
    • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start => Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java. To do that:
      • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
      • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
      • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
      • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Note 1. If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
Note 2. The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.[/color][/i]

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

  • Go to start > Run > Copy the following line in the runbox and click OK. Post the content of the open log:

    notepad C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

  • Please use Internet Explorer to perform a BitDefender Online Virus and Malware Scan
    • Click on I Agree.
    • If an Active X warning box will appear Click on Install.
Note: If you got the message:"Could not load the Online Scanner! Click here for other possible fixes", it means Internet Explorer has blocked the Active X being installed. Just above the page under the Internet Explorer toolbar you see this message:
"This website wants to install the following add-on: "Bitdefender OnlineScanner v8' from 'BITDEFENDER LLC'. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to install it, click here..."
Click on that and select: Install Active x.
    • Now Click On Start Scan. Please wait as it might take some time.
    • If it found anything when it finished, on the BitDefender page click Click here to export the scan report
    • Give the report a name and save it. The file will be a .HTML file.
    • Please attach the file to your reply.
    • To attach the file press ADDREPLY, under the reply window press Browse... show the path to the file on your computer.
    • Highlight the file and click Open then press the green UPLOAD button.
Note: "Click here to export the scan report" appears on the BitDefender page when the scan is finished. However when the computer is clean it might not appear.

  • Please copy and paste a fresh Hijackthis log to your reply. Tell me also how is the computer running.

Again, thank you for devoting your time to my problem. I want you to know that this is the first time since working with computers (19 years) that I am unable to diagnose and fix a problem. The new crop of emerging viruses, trojans and embedded malware is getting increasingly difficult to deal with. As far as how the computer is running, everything appears ok - I have noticed the boot time is very long compared to the "pre infection" period, and that during the boot sequence the screen giving you a choice between start-up modes (safe mode, etc.) and "start windows normally" flashes on, then disappears. This boot behavior is very different than what I am used to seeing. I do not have many start-up programs.

Okay, based on your last post: 1) I ran "AskBarDis," the Command window flashed on, then off with no apparent action. 2) I updated Java as directed. 3) The HOSTS file is too long to send (MVPS HOSTS FILE)

4) I performed the BitDefender online full scan - no problems were found

5) Here is latest Hijackthis log:

The change in malware section is indeed so fast.

I have noticed the boot time is very long compared to the "pre infection" period, and that during the boot sequence the screen giving you a choice between start-up modes (safe mode, etc.) and "start windows normally" flashes on, then disappears. This boot behavior is very different than what I am used to seeing.

This is because ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. It gives you an option at early boot, after 3 second Windows start normally. The Recovery Console is another option beside the Safe Mode to perform some commands if the Windows didn't boot.

The boot time becomes shorter after the following step.

Everything looks good. :thumbup2:

Go to start > run and copy and paste or type next command in the field then hit enter:

ComboFix /u

Note: There's a space between ComboFix and /

This will uninstall ComboFix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore.

The first reboot might be a little slow, the next one will be faster.

Optional Recommendations.
  • This small application you may want to keep and use to keep the computer clean.
    Download CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
    • Run the installer to install the application.
    • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
    • Open CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
    • Close all open windows inclusive Internet Explorer and click Run Cleaner.
    • Close CCleaner.
  • I recommend using Site Advisor for safe surfing. It is a free extension both for Internet Explorer and Firefox. When you search a site it gives you an indication of how safe a site is.

  • I recommend installing this small application for safe surfing: Javacoolsİ SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. Update it manually (if you use the free version) once in 2-3 weeks and enable the restriction.
Please let me know ComboFix uninstalled properly.

Happy surfing!

It seems after resolving the problem the topic is not visited any more. I wanted to make sure ComboFix is uninstalled properly before closing the topic.
