I was just curious how many should be there that seem to be the same by all users. Mine has 4 users it seems, Network-System-Local-Owner. Here is an example when I show processes from all users there are 12 svchost.exe processes all described as Host Process for Windows. 3 for Network, 6 for System, 3 Local and 3 owner. Why so many?

I have 12 on my Vista virtual machine - 6 for System, 3 for Network, and 3 for Local.

To find out what's running beneath them, right click on each one and select "Go to services" - and it'll highlight the services that are running.
For a more detailed look at them, you can hover your mouse over the process when using this free program: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...ssExplorer.mspx

What needs to be running in the background and how do I stop things that I don't need running in the background?

LindaIHN - please start your own topic for your issues. Each system is different and has different requirements.

Okay. I just joined this evening and am still trying to get the hang of things. I thought this was the same subject, which is why I put it here.
