every time this computer starts (even in safe mode) it receives a message stating that the nt authority system has initiated a shutdown because the rpc service terminated unexpectedly. It counts down from 60 seconds and then restarts.
I attempted searching for causes of this. It seemed like this was the msblaster worm or sasser because it gave the exact same warning when this was around. However the computer is running service pack 2 (which has the fix for the vulnerability). I have used the Shutdown -a trick to be able to stay on the computer longer. It lasts for about 2 minutes and then the countdown starts again. I slaved the hard drive to another pc and ran multiple scans on it. I used avg malware byte's anti-malware, super anti malware. It removed a couple of things so i tried to boot again, but i still get no where. I tried to stop the rebooting by going into the services and changing the settings under rpc service to take no action but the services are not there. I also tried the system restore option but it had been turned off and i can't turn it back on.
This is not my pc, so i don't know if it was turned off to begin with or if a program initiated it. The owner knows very little and could offer no help with this problem. ANY IDEAS ANYONE!!

Here is my Hijack this log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

here is my log report: I hope that I have put them in the right place. I did not see any instructions. Maybe I was hurrying too much.

Hello.

When the essential Windows service fail, it is very difficult to run anything.

Do you have your Windows XP CD available? We may have to do a repair install.

With Regards,

It sounds, from your reply, that you don't believe that this is virus related -but the OS that is the problem. Is that correct?

I don't have MY xp cd available. I may be able to get another xp disc. would it matter what service pack the disc was?

Hello.

Yes. From what I see in that log, there is not active malware.

A SP2 XP disk would be needed.

I will have to try and locate one. The one I could get has service pack 3 on it.

Hello.

Hmm.. I actually don't know. Usually, it's the other way around where the disk is older than the Windows installation.

I would ask in the Windows XP Forum where they have more experience with such.

Sorry, I had misread your post.

Refering to this guide, use the SP2 disk to perform a repair install.

Tell me how it goes. Take a new DDS.txt log after.

I've done what you asked.

Now when starting I get the following message:

windows could not start because the following is either missing or corrupt:

system32\drivers\fastfat.sys

Hello.

Please confirm that the SP2 disk was used and that the version of windows was at SP2. I can't be sure because DDS was unable to read the SP version since the windows services were failing.

If so..

Boot into the SP2 disk.
Press R to start the recovery console.
Select the C:\Windows installation.
Enter the administrator password when prompted.

Type:
copy "x:\i386\fastfat.sy_" "c:\windows\system32\fastfat.sys"
replace "x" with the drive letter of the CD drive.

Type:
exit

Try to boot again after.
