Hi! I got infected by some virus that I didn't have the time to identify. "Spybot search & destroy" reported attempt to change Registry by "Mhomebaxitiv" which I denied. Then run test & removed some infections. After that I run an AVG Antivirus scan which found some "trojan" & then requested a reboot. After the reboot WIN-XP logins up to the point where user has to click to login. After clicking on user name the system keeps returning to this point (like an infinite loop) & never enters -even in safe mode-. I managed to boot with WIN-Vista (on a second partition) in order to communicate with you & run DDS. I would appreciate any help since all my jobs are on XP & I'm really stuck now. Thanks.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have not yet resolved the problem but unfortunately I' m away on a trip & I don't have access to the infected PC. I will be back in about a week. Will it be OK if I send you the results then?

Hi, Please note the following which I did not mention in the initial post:

I initially got infected by MSN virus. I received a message from a friend saying "A foto" followed by a url that I unfortunately clicked. A command window opened after that and "Spybot search & destroy" reported attempt to change Registry by "Mhomebaxitiv" which I denied. This attempt to change the registry kept reporting for some time & I denied all changes. When it stopped I run a spybot test & removed some infections.

After that I run an AVG Antivirus scan which found some "trojan" & then requested a reboot. A trojan was also detected on userinit.exe & I had it moved to the AVG vault which is probably why the WIN-XP user cannot login. After the reboot WIN-XP logins up to the point where user has to click to login. After clicking on user name the user automatically is logged-off & the system keeps returning to the login- point (like an infinite loop) & never enters -even in safe mode-.

I managed to boot with WIN-Vista (on a second partition) & run ESET which identified more Trojans & probably some more viruses which I suppose were cleaned but still the problem holds. The DDS test was performed under WIN-Vista.

Following comes the DDS.txt.

Hello.

Let's run Combofix and see what we can find.

Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 48 hours please feel free to send me a PM.

The help you receive here is always free but if you wish to show your appreciation, you may wish to Posted Image.

Hello again.

Hi! This is the result of combofix. Let me remind you that the infected partition is WIN-XP, now partition D:.

What do you want me to check? Why don't you just remove the Windows XP parition since you can't use it anymore and use the Vista instead?

I'm not sure why you posted here exactly now that you paritioned it....

FYI, that combofix log looks okay.

With Regards,

Hi again, As I mentioned in the original post I have many applications running on WIN-XP that do not run properly on VISTA. The VISTA partition was there before the infection & I use it temporarily because I cannot LOGIN to WIN-XP at all. I would much appreciate it if you can help me restore WIN-XP.

Hello.

I think it would be easier if you reinstall the Windows XP partition. I can't do much without you getting you into Windows. Then you might want to format it afterwards later on if you want to.

I would rather not format WIN-XP because there are many applications that need to be installed again plus other staff that I cannot access any longer. Is there some way to recover userinit.exe so that I can login to WIN-XP & try to disinfect? (Note: A trojan was detected on userinit.exe & I had it moved to the AVG vault which is probably why the WIN-XP user cannot login.)

Hello.

Okay so you have an XP disk. Good.

Reinstall may be easier and the reinstall will not remove any of your files so you can back up anything. Userinit.exe infected/removed is definitely not good, you have a nasty infection and your computer may be compromised already.

To restore the userinit.exe is not that hard but your computer is seriously infected and a format is probably best option here..

*Insert the original Windows XP CD and reboot the computer.
You may need to configure your computer to boot from the CD-ROM drive using the F2, F10, F11 or F12 keys.
*When the Windows XP Setup has started, press R to repair the Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console.
*Select the Windows installation to repair (generally this is C:\Windows and number 1, since you partitioned the drive it may differ.).
*Type the number and then pressing Enter on your keyboard.
*Type the Administrator password (if you don't have one, then don't worry about it) and press Enter on your keyboard.
*You will now be in the Recovery Console. Please enter the following commands:

X: Note: Please replace the letter X with the drive letter of the CD
Hit [ENTER] on your keyboard
CD I386
Hit [ENTER] on your keyboard
EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
Hit [ENTER] on your keyboard

After typing in "EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32" you should see something like "1 file(s) copied", and that means the file was successfully copied.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi!
I' m sorry for the delay but I had to order the Windows-XP CD from the representative that originally installed it since my copy seems to be destroyed.
I hope that by tomorrow I will be able to follow through with your instructions.

Thank you.
