Apologies for not posting a DDS log, it won't execute. Maybe because I'm running 64bit XP.

I am running Windows XP x64 edition (actually based on Server 2003)

Most every link in a google search in Firefox (latest edition 3.0.7) redirects to advertisement webpages. I have Ad Aware, Spybot, Symantec Antivirus, and Windows Firewall (no better firewalls for x64 that I know of). Scans have come up with nothing. I also have run ESET and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware to no avail. Notice the (missing file) entries in my HJT log below: Why are those files gone/Can I restore them?

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

I've used the infected PC sparingly since my first post, opting for my clean laptop instead. However, there are a few changes that have occurred. The first and only of many programs to identify anything wrong was PandaScan, a free online scanner. It must've knocked something loose, as midway through Panda's scan my Symantec Antivirus identified and continuously attempted to delete a file: C:\Windows\ynrmgxf.axh. In safe mode I couldn't manually delete this, it kept coming back. So I used HJT's delete upon reboot feature which was successful. Also, a few new suspicious settings showed up in a more recent HJT log:

O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0012-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

Google said they were related to Java but they were new and didn't have any text next to them so I used the 'Fix' feature to delete them.

After said changes, no more browser redirects. However, my machine still grinds randomly (didn't used to) and there was a file in the System Restore Volume that Panda identified as "suspicious" beginning with the letter 'A,' followed by a series of numbers and letters. It was an executable. Unfortunately I don't have the name because my browser crashed (symptom of the hijack) when I attempted to google said filename. I lost the scan's results and, since it took many hours to scan my computer, I have not used Panda scan again.

Where does this leave me? Well, I'd like to make sure my computer is as clean as possible. Yes, I am not experiencing redirects in google anymore, nor am I having browser crashes. However, I really didn't know what I was doing in the actions described above. I would like to make sure there aren't any reminants of spyware/malware on my computer.

My machine seems to be running slower and the hard drive grinds in a series every two seconds or so even during inactivity, where it used to be silent.

Please help me clean up.

As described in the first post, DDS does not work, even with internet unplugged and all anti-script programs disabled. I don't know why, I tried a copy from each mirror. Just a hunch... could it be because I'm running x64? Would I have troubles with a 32bit script in cmd? Since DDS didn't work I'm posting a fresh HijackThis log, post-changes described above.

Hello DS345,

Sorry about not catching the inability to run DDS. My bad. Please try this:

Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You will need to run this tool while connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.
  • Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program.
  • If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.
  • Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.
  • Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days).
  • When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.
  • Please paste the contents of that file as a response to this topic.
If you cannot get RSIT to run, please let us know.

Also, just started Panda Activescan about 3 hours ago, will have to let it run all night, but it now shows 4 infected and one suspicious files, more than before. I'll have to wait to see what they are.

Thanks for your time and help. Hopefully we will get this sorted out.

The Panda Scan infected files were in system volume information/_restore so I reset the restore point. RSIT didn't complete, but did leave a log file:

Hello.

The files are not missing. HijackThis and the other tools were not written for 64x systems.

Are the redirects still occuring? If so, is it only on FireFox?

With Regards,
The Panda

No, redirects are not occurring anymore. Originally they were both in firefox and ie. I think all I need at this point is someone to double check my RSIT log for any problems or remnants of malware. Or if I need to use any other tools, please let me know. Computer seems fully functional. All files that were identified by Panda Activescan and Symantec have been deleted successfully. Thank you OrangeBlossom and Panda for your help.

Hello.

The logs look clean.

As far as I can tell, the infection was removed.
