I apologize for the vague Topic Title but im not sure what to call it or what is causing the problem.
Ive been getting several constant messages when i turn on my computer:

svchost.exe application error

The instruction at "0x7c11c48" referred memory "0xfffffff8".
The memory could not be "read".

And:

svchost.exe application error

The instruction at "0x7560e6a" referred memory "0x00000008".
The memory could not be "read".

Sometimes the messages have the following below them:

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

These messages seem to increase in frequency when im doing something on the internet and have caused my computer to freeze up several times. Also I cant seem to get certain programs; Spybot: Search and Destroy, my windows firewall, or even my securiy updates from the microsoft homepage; to work or download. I'm not sure how the last bit may be related to the problem.

My DDS Log:

Hello ielzea,

I apologise for the delay, the forum is busy.
----------------------------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Checked (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report.
A new HijackThis log.

Thanks for answering and I didn't mind the wait.

Now to the problem at hand. I tried to go to the web site you indicated, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, by clicking on the link in your message but everytime I tried to my computer either redirected me to a random website or told me the link was broken. I tried to google and use yahoo to pull up the site but everytime i tried to go to the site I kept getting redirected to a random website. I've had the same problem with trying to get the newest updates for any of my anti malware programs. Its very aggravating. What should I do?

Edit: I finally managed to download through alternative website, Major Geek, but once installed i couldnt get it to work. I kept clicking on the icon and nothing would happen, I restarted my compter and tried again with the same results. Ive again had the same problem with Spybot search and destroy.

Hello ielzea,

Your program worked like a charm and i was able to run MBAM.

Great! :thumbup2:
----------------------------------------------
Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
Don't forget to re-enable it, after i tell you that your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.medionusa.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.simnetenterprise.com (HKLM)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Do you know what this is and what it does?

[Bart Station] C:\Program Files\ISP50\hta\station.sbrt

A part of your ISP?
----------------------------------------------
Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Private Messages for personal support will be ignored. If you need help post in the forum.

Well the popups are gone and my computer is running much faster, so yay.
I'm not sure what the file, [Bart Station] C:\Program Files\ISP50\hta\station.sbrt, is or what it does.

Here is the Combofix log:

Hello ielzea,

Well the popups are gone and my computer is running much faster, so yay.

I am glad :thumbup2:

I see your Ad-Aware is running. Please disable it again following my previous instructions, and leave it like that untill we are done. It may interfere with my fixes.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O16 - DPF: {CF40ACC5-E1BB-4AFF-AC72-04C2F616BCA7} -

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.1.
You can download it from http://get.adobe.com/reader/
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader, you can download Foxit PDF Reader from here.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.)
----------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 13.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Computer status is good. My connection is running strong. However I have been having problems with my audio ever since I got the virus. All of my sound wont work. At first it was just internet videos that didnt have sound, then the sound from games wont work. Im not sure how this may be related if at all.

Here is the Kaspersky Report:

Hello ielzea,

However I have been having problems with my audio ever since I got the virus. All of my sound wont work. At first it was just internet videos that didnt have sound, then the sound from games wont work. Im not sure how this may be related if at all.

Did you check wires etc? Or is this a wireless laptop?

I will see if we can do something about it, or you can post at a General Troubleshooting forum after we are done, and see if you can resolve this.
----------------------------------------------
Disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean, and i will let you know when you are.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
EMPTY NORTON QUARANTEE FOLDERS
Go to this page and follow the directions for emptying Quarantine for your version of Norton Antivirus:
Removing files from Norton AntiVirus Quarantine
----------------------------------------------
You have an infected restore point, at your D:\ Drive.

What is D:\ Drive?
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
A new HijackThis log.
Let me know about D:\ Drive, and my first question please.

Sound Problems:

Ive checked all the wires and replugged in stuff but there's still no sound.

Norton Quarantine:

I havn't run Norton in a couple of years and have unintalled several of the componets. I was unable to access the quarantine folder or even find it when i searched.

D:\ Drive:

I couldnt find anything by that name but i did find something called D:\ Driver. I looked through it but I lack the expertise to know what any of the stuff refers too.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpfull on these questions.

Here is my Hijack This report:

Hello ielzea,

So has your Symantec subscirpton expired?
----------------------------------------------
Now for your sound problem. It's not related with the virus. We can make a try and see if this works.

Open your Control Panel.

Double-click to open Sound and Audio Devices
See if under Audio tab the right Default device is selected.
Also in the same location under Voice tab there is a Test Hardware ... button. Use that one too.
----------------------------------------------
Can you please update your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and run it again?

If the item below shows up, let it remove it please.

D:\System Volume Information\_restore{8F6CA863-4F79-4B8E-BF2F-E13F6FD46F34}\RP977\A0100547.com Infected: Trojan.Win32.TDSS.utc 1

Post back the report.

Hello ielzea,

Your advice on the sound issue was right on the money. I now have sound. Thank you so much.

You are welcome, my thanks to farbar, which helped me with this. :thumbup2:

My subscription has been expired for at least a year.

Ok, we'll remove it, and you will install a free Anti-Virus.
----------------------------------------------
INSTALLING & RUNNING AN ANTIVIRUS

Please follow below details regarding to Antivirus installation-see my post below:
  • download the installer
  • disconnect from internet
  • remove old one << Uninstall Symantec using Control panel.
  • also please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.
  • install new one
  • reconnect, immediately update, and
  • run the Anti-virus and let it quarantine all its findings.
----------------------------------------------
You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently.  Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

Let me know you have a new Anti-Virus installed, and Symantec was removed completely, and if the pc runs ok.

I ran the uninstaller for norton so its all gone now. I got the AntiVir PersonalEditionClassic to protect my computer, thanks for the recommendation. My PC has been running very smoothly. Should i continue running Ad-aware and Spybot: search and destroy?
