hi. dell 1520 laptop, 1+ yrs old. 2g ram, 80g hard drive. xp home. images which show well on my desktop (and other pc's) look miserable on my laptop. b/w had very little range of shades, most of the image is made up of middle grey and shades a little lighter or darker. on my desktop it will have bright whites and dark blacks, with many shades in between. also, on laptop the colors are muted. i haven't tried anything yet, not wanting to make the problem worse. thank you, boyd.

Can you attach the laptop to an external monitor to make sure it's not the screen itself?

most laptops have an external VGA hookup you can attach a VGA cable to. However, are you sure the color and resolution settings are set right? running in highest color possible, and all drivers are installed and running right?
