Hello...
I have multiple iexplorers running in the background (task manager) I tried uninstalling and re installing spybot and malware bytes because suddenly they weren't working. Turns out there in the background too. So i cant access those...trend micro housecall couldn't help either. It found things, but couldn't fix. Nothing looked to funny in the hijackthis log, but i'm still learning. Could one of you rockstars help?

Adding in further information from another post. ~ OB

So one afternoon, i heard something that sounded like the radio, and when i looked, it was coming from my computer. I control alt deleted and saw that iexplorer was running, but not. I didnt start it, and I couldn't see it. I've had one other infection before this, similar, so i ended the process, thats where it was.The "radio" stopped. I looked through the HJT log, nothing familiar. I also ran all the tools the builder of my PC told me to use last time which include dial a fix and atf cleaner.

The behavior of my computer now is as such:
-I cannot "see" any of my anti malware programs, even though they are running (task manager) these include spybot and malware bytes. I had uninstalled malwarebytes, by mistake, in an late night/early morning fog, so thats actually no longer installed. When i treid to re-install, i get the same behavior. Its running,in the background somewhere, but I cant see it.
-avg does not find anything when run

-rootalyzer finds 9 hidden entries, all which cannot be found through explorer. very messy file names too. After some googling, I decided to delete them. They dont really "delete" as far as i can tell, they come back, and one says that it cannot delete yet (its noted in the log if you need it)

-That "radio" bit hasn't happen again, but my machine does freeze every so often. No determinable trigger for that one.

-also tried to install super anti spyware on suggestion, but i get a prompt that says the admin has put restrictions on the installation.

End of added material. ~ OB

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Thanks OB, Thanks KoanYorel. No change as far as I can tell. I just stopped using windows for a bit. I have a dual boot on a different HD with Ubuntu on it. I use both for different things, so i'm still very interested in resolving the problem. I have attached the new dds and attach file. I also have a rootalyzer log, not attached. Let me know if you need it. The results of that seem interesting.

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you.

Let's see what's hiding.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with ComboFix and other tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1, Link 2, Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted ImagePosted Image

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted Image
  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Download and Run Scan with GMER
We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.

Please download GMER.zip to your desktop from any of the links below:
LINK1, LINK2
  • Right click on GMER.zip and select "Extract All".
  • Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  • Double click GMER.exe. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  • You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  • Leaving the settings at default, click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.
Please include the log in your next reply.
In your next reply include:
-the ComboFix log
-the GMER scan log

Hello.

Please delete the copy of ComboFix you have.

Download a new copy. In the Save As window, save ComboFix as ComboFix123.exe.

Try running ComboFix again.

Hello.

ComboFix removed a nasty infection.

Posted ImageBackdoor Threat
I'm sorry to say that your computer was infected with one or more backdoor trojans.

This means that sensitive information could have been stolen. I would advise to change any passwords for any accounts that you have accessed with the infected computer using a clean computer ASAP. If you have used this computer for banking, I would strongly suggest that you report the possible stolen information. Please do not use the computer for any further transactions, or to enter any other information, if at all possible, until it is declared clean.

You may want to read this article on how to handle identity theft.
You may also want to read this article regarding preventing of identity theft.

This computer can still be cleaned, however, I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% safe even after disinfection.

Please read When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall.

I will proceed assuming you wish to disinfect. If you want to do a reinstall, reply back saying so.

Submit File to Online Scanner
There is a file that I would like you to check out for me using VirusTotal/VirSCAN
  • Open VirusTotal Online Scanner or VirSCAN. If one site is busy or down, try the other
  • At the top of the page you'll see a box. Paste in the following line(s) (do one line at a time).
  • c:\windows\system32\user32.DLL
  • c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
  • c:\windows\explorer.exe
  • Click Submit.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Copy Scanner Results into your next reply.
  • If more than one file was listed, repeat for each of them.
Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
If you already have MBAM installed, simply update and run a quick scan.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware setup and to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

Refer to the steps given here on installing MalwareBytes, running the scan, and saving the log file (not on using File Assasin).
  • If you have trouble updating, try the other mirror download site.
  • Should the computer in question not be able update using the normal method download the update file from here, using another machine if needed. Simple double click the file to install the updates.
  • If MalwareBytes asks to reboot to remove certain items, do so right away.
Please include the scan logfile in your next reply.

Install From Windows Updates
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will create a patch for it. After the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malware being installed on your computer.

Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please reboot and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install.

Give me an update on the symptoms.

With Regards,
The Panda

You've been a rock star....

So heres the dish... I have a dual boot system, one is a "special" version of windows that the builder told me should NOT be updated using windows update. The other is ubuntu 8.04 (maybe .10 soon, new release) and these are on separate hard drives, with grub as the boot loader. I just want to DISINFECT now, for sure. Are there any super tough firewalls I can download, or is there some resource on how to reformat windows on a system such as this? I've always used reformatting as a final bailout, but this is the first time I didn't know how because my hardware was smarter than me...
(sign of pre-immanent old age?) So thats that...

as for symptoms, That radio bit never did happen again. The only thing for sure, was I have been paying particular attention to the task manager, and see iexplorer running when I know it isn't, and when I would try to run/install something "anti", it too would run without being seen. So there you have it. I don't think I'll have time to do those last steps tonight, but tomorrow afternoon I will and hope to post results before dinner.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise...

Erik

Hello Erik.

In this case, a reformat would be difficult if the OSes are installed on same partition. We can skip updating Windows in that case.

Are the "anti" programs still unable to run even now? ComboFix had removed the rootkit infection that causes this.

With Regards,
The Panda

So yeah... we're all good as far as I can tell... Everything ran fine after combo "123" and ran malware bytes and have already updated my other "anti" programs, immunized, etc.etc.etc...

I think we're made in the shade, check out the log files and thanx so much....

Hello.

Looks good. Let's get an online scan off.

Run Scan with Kaspersky
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.

This scan is for Internet Explorer Only.

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select Run as administrator to perform this scan.

  • Please disable your realtime protection software before proceeding. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open the Kaspersky Scanner page.
  • Click on Accept and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

This scanner will only scan. It does not remove any malware it finds.

Followup with a new DDS.txt log for a check.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Looks good. Let's just remove one leftover file and we're good to go.

Download and Run ATFCleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program will clear out temporary files and settings. You will likely be logged out of the forum where you are recieving help.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select Run As Administrator.
  • Under Main Select Files to Delete choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Download and Run OTMoveIT
  • Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer to your desktop. If you have already used the program, there is no need to download a new one.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below. Do not copy the word "code".
    :files
    C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPSkin.exe
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste List Of Files/Patterns To Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Close all open windows expect OTMoveIt.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key. Navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest ".log" file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Uninstall ComboFix
Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Click on your Start Menu, then Run....
  • Now type the following into the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the "x" and "/".
    ComboFix /u

    Posted Image
Uninstalling ComboFix will do the following:
  • Delete ComboFix and its components from your computer.
  • Delete other tools commonly used during the malware removal process.
  • Resets clock settings to standard format.
  • Hides file extensions and hidden/system files.
  • Clears System Restore cache and creates new restore point.
Preventing Malware Infection in the Future
Please take some time to look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections: For general slowness problems that you may have, take a look at Slow Computer/browser? It May Not Be Malware. Read How to use the Startup Database to identify and disable uneeded processes and increase the amount of available resources.

one questions... Is it possible that some of these warez that hide in memory, can come in when I'm using linux and then infect windows next time i boot? I ask, because we really only watch netflix and update our ipods on windows. We've pretty much migrated all the way to linux.

I've learned a lot through this. My only concern is that that combo fix thing did not work. combo fix seemed like a standalone sort of tool. It was not avail. to uninstall. So was that a trick question to see if i'm really following instructions? ;)

All seems very fine though... thank you so very much panda.
