Two nights ago I visited a website for fantasy baseball information (www.fantasybaseballdugout.com/2008/09/03/sleepers-fantasy-baseball-2009) and my computer started to run extremely sluggish. The Windows Defender on my computer started running and identified and removed the "Vundo.gen" trojan. It appears the Defender successfully removed the trojan 3 different times in the span of about 10 minutes. However, the computer continued to run very slow after this and the internet even slower. It's continued this way since. I've downloaded and run both Spybot and Adaware but it's still running slow. On start-up, I'm receiving error messages showing "error loading c\windows\system32\biwifasi.dll ; jujijano.dll ; and kohisiva.dll."

My DDS log is listed below.

I really appreciate any help you can provide on this. Thank you very much!

Hello,

You're welcome. :)

I have all the info I need, thanks. :thumbup2:

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! :step4:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

tea -

To be honest, I'm not even sure I know all of the protective programs I'm running. What's the best way to go about making sure they're all off?

Thanks.

Hello,

Disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Disable McAfee, and disable AdAware. All 3 of these tend to mess with ComboFix, and ComboFix has to be able to run here. :thumbup2:

Tea -

Alright, so I ran combofix and attached both the combofix log and the hijack this post combofix log. The problem I'm having now is that the computer has gone into super slow mode, worse than before, and I'm receiving a system utility prompt when it's restarted. Should I/can I set this to normal start-up now that combofix is done? This was something combofix downloaded when it was running.

Thanks!

Hello,

I'm not sure what you mean by normal startup? I never asked you to change anything about startup, just disabling those 3 programs while ComboFix ran. :thumbup2:

Hello,

I didn't manually make any changes other than shutting those programs down. During the combofix install it had the prompt for the WINDOWS RECOVERY CONSOLE to which I clicked yes. Now when I start up the computer prior to going to windows it gives another start-up option (similar screen as if I were to start in safe mode) but it goes through that screen fairly quickly. Based on the combofix instructions this seems normal - "ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper." This also shows 2 prompt boxes when Windows loads up, which I've attached screen shots of below.

In any event, the machine is definitely slower now than it was before - is this a normal part of the process or is something out of the ordinary slowing it down?

Thanks. :thumbup2:

I can't see what you attached.

When you start up from now on you'll get those options....yes, that's normal. I have no idea why it's that slow at this point.

Are you still getting the same error messages on startup?

I figured the start-up was OK. The messages I'm receiving once Windows loads are:

"You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.

The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Start-up mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal start-up mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility."

Then there is a check box with the note - Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts:"

Not knowing what to do I just "X'd" out of this message and then get to the actual System Configuration Utility prompt where I can select Normal, Diagnostic or Selective Start-up. It's currently on Selective.

Hope that helps! I'm guessing this may also be why it's so slow.

Is there anything else that needs to be done to remove any virus or infection that is/was on the computer?

Thanks again! :thumbup2:

Jim

Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts:" Yes, check that box, otherwise everything under the sun will start up.

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6_u_12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

If your computer is still slow after that, please post a HijackThis log and I'll see if there's anything you can fix to speed it up a bit.

I'm assuming then that the errors you were originally getting are not happening now? :thumbup2:

Thanks again tea!

I'm not seeing the errors any more which is great! I haven't yet restarted after checking the box but I'm thinking it should speed up. I couldn't find the JRE that you were referencing though and it looks like they've moved to version 13. Which of these should I download? Assuming it's this one but the 64-bit threw me off - RE 6 Update 13

This release includes the highly anticipated 64-bit Java Plug-In (for 64-bit browsers only), Windows Server 2008 support, and performance improvements of Java and JavaFX applications

Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, 13. They just updated the updates and I forgot to update MY update. :step4: :step1: All updated now though. :thumbup2:

Post back to me just once more, please. Let me know that you got the update all right, and if the speed has improved. Then I'll stop hounding you. :)

hi tea -

Speed has definitely picked up now. :thumbup2: Still a little slow on the start-up but it's better than it was before this whole process. Really appreciate your help with everything!

Here is my most recent Hijackthis log. Can you let me know if you see anything else in the log that I could uninstall or fix just to get the machine at it's best?

Thanks again!
