Hello,
my friend has recently used my computer to browse questionable websites and i am now infected with viruses and hijackers. now

everytime i start my windows, windows explorer restarts in an infinite loop with the error "Explorer.exe has encountered a

problem and needs to close" with Error signature:
AppName: explorer.exe
Appver: 6.0.2600.0
Module: unknown
Mod ver: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 00000000
the only way for me to continue using windows is to clt+alt+del, end explorer.exe process, and use New Task within windows

Task Manager to run programs. when i start ie in this way i would be able to browse the internet for a while and ie would

randomly crash with a similar error as above but with Error signature:
AppName: iexplorer.exe
Appver: 6.0.2600.0
Module: unknown
Mod ver: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 10002263
my antivirus has found and deleted some viruses. my spyware remover and adaware se have also found and deleted some malware.

i have run sfc /scannow and even done a repair reinstall of windows xp, which caused my windows xp to revert back from sp1 to

the original version, but the problem is still there.
it seems to me that explorer.exe and ieplorer.exe are somehow related and by reinsalling ieplorer.exe the problem maybe

solved but before i do that i'm hoping that someone might be able to help me to diagnose this problem with this hijackthis

log. thank you in advance.

Hello empty_bottle and welcome to the BC forums. We have multiple infections to deal with here so let's start with this.

se.dll Fix - 2k/XP

Please perform the following steps:
  • Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).
  • Download SpSeHjfix.zip and unzip it to it's own folder. Do not run it yet.
  • Download CleanUp! and install it. Start CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run to completion. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive so be patient.
  • Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
    • Press the Enter key.
  • Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
  • Run SpSeHjfix and click on Start Disinfection.
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder that SpSeHjfix is located in.
  • Now run CWShredder and click on the Fix -> button.
  • Reboot and repeat the above process.
Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix.

Cheers.

Hi empty_bottle. That took care of the se.dll infection so now let's clean up the rest. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {B84BC92B-BFE4-8496-5EA1-EE167CF7144C} - NopeZ.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\fllbr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qqfep.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Loader.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gjnl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\popcorn64.exe
C:\WINDOWS\pumba2.dll
C:\WINDOWS\q1578840_disk.dll
C:\Program Files\WareOut\ <--folder

Now perform a search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.NopeZ.dll
NSYSCPLSTR.exe
WTFCTF.exe
init32.exe
driver64.exe
xxtoolbar.exe

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #7

AdAware SE v1.06

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE v1.06:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:

    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

hello ot,
when i try to delete one of the files that you said to delete, C:\WINDOWS\q1578840_disk.dll, i get the error "access denied, make sure the file is not write-protected or is in use" even in safe mode. also i lost connection to the internet after i did CCleaner but i went into windows 98 on the second harddrive of the same computer and ran ad-aware and online antivirus on the c drive. i cant go to control panel to take a look at the network settings because explorer.exe is not accesible and i dont know any other way to get in network setting in control panel but here is a new hjt log:

Hi empty_bottle. Ok, let's get rid of the q1578840_disk.dll file.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on KillBox.exe.
  • Click "Delete on Reboot".
  • Paste the line below into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.
    • C:\WINDOWS\q1578840_disk.dll
  • Click the "Delete File" button which looks like a stop sign.
  • Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
  • Click "Yes" at the Delete next Reboot prompt.
  • If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O20 - Winlogon Notify: style2 - C:\WINDOWS\q1578840_disk.dll
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

WOW! i'm really impressed with your computer skills OT, you've managed to delete the file that has been causing explorer.exe to crash in an infinite loop on windows start up. it appears that C:\WINDOWS\q1578840_disk.dll is the culprit. much respect to you. I would gladly donate a few bucks to bleepingcomputer.com when i bring my paypal account out of suspension. you gave me a list of files to remove, how did you know what files to remove, i'm trying to learn this stuff myself? by the way, that killbox program didn't really work i had to goto windows 98 on the second harddrive of the same computer to delete it. I'm sure glad i installed a backup OS when i built this computer. I knew something like this might happen I hardly ever use windows 98 so it's practically brand new.
Anyway, here's a new copy of my hjt log:

Hi empty_bottle. I only see 1 entry that doesn't want to go away so let's take care of it like this.

url=http://ralphcaddell.com/Uploads/deldomains.zip]DelDomains.zip and unzip it to your desktop.

Locate deldomains.inf on your desktop and right-click on it. Choose Install from the popup menu and answer Yes or Ok if you get any firther prompts.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi empty_bottle. Yes, you will not see any confirmation dialogs when merging a reg file. It does appear that everythign went fine because it has reset your dowmain entries and your log is now clean. Good job! How are things running? Any other problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

hello OT,
thanks for all your help but there're 2 entries that are suspicious looking to me is it ok if i remove them?

1) R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://websearchnetwork.com/
(everytime i start ie it automatically goes to this page and i dont want that to happen)
2) O23 - Service: AntiVir Update (AVWUpSrv) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\AVPersonal\AVWUPSRV.EXE (file missing)
(the only antivirus program that's supposed to be on my computer is avast4 i dont recognize this and the folder is not even there)

Also i get this pop up message a lot which led me to suspect that it might not be an authentic Windows message:

"Warning: Windows firewall detected suspicious network activity. Malicious codes try to steal your privacy information.........
Do you want to learn how to protect your computer? Yes, No"

but the thing is i get this message even when i turn windows xp firewall off, and i always click no to get rid of this message but then it keeps poping up again at random times. I have a screen shot of this message but i dont have a server to upload it to.

Another thing is when browsing the internet sometimes i'd be taken to another website called "Trusted Pharmacy" can you help getting rid of this also thanks

Hi empty_bottle. Your browser is going to http://websearchnetwork.com/ when you open it up because that is what you have set as your start page. If you want it to go somewhere else then change your start page through Tools>Internet Options.

The Antivir service is part of H+BEDV’s AntiVirus software and is there either because this software was installed at one time or a scan was done at this site at one time. If you want to remove the service then do the following:

To remove a service.

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the AntiVir Update service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
    • sc delete AVWUpSrv
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Cheers.

Hey empty_bottle. Post a new HijackThis log. You might have reinfected yourself.
