Posted 14 March 2009 - 02:58 PM

My computer is infected with something that causes the google results to be redirected. The results appear OK but clicking on the link goes to sites not related to the results.

I have Kaspersky Antivirus on the computer. I have also run Malwarebytes AntiMalware and Trend Micro's Housecall on the computer. None of them detect anything.

I did some searches and found an article that siad this was caused by a file called wdmaud.sys in the systwm32 directory. I deleted it, the first search on google worked correctly but every other search since then takes you to a redirected page.

Thanks in advance.

Hello there,

Thanks for that. :thumbup2:

Do you have a router?

Download the HostsXpert Here
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert to your desktop

Open up the HostsXpert program.

* Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper left corner is enabled.
* Click back up Host files
* then click "Restore MS Hosts File"
* close program

Highlight and copy the contents inside the code box below:

cd desktop
reg query "HKLM\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32" /s >look2.txt
start notepad look2.txt
exit
cls

Click Start > Run, and, in the Open area, type: cmd
Press: Enter to open a command window.
Right-click by the blinking cursor in the command window and select: Paste
The command window will close and a log will open on your Desktop.

Paste the look.txt back here.[/quote]

Thanks,
tea

Oh great! :thumbup2: You never said, so I thought you were still being redirected. I was worried because everything looks good and I couldn't understand why you were still having problems. :step4:

As far as I can see we're done. :)

If there are no further problems:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Take care!
