My computer began, suddenly to take alot of time to boot after logging in to windows xp. I noticed that behind the windows task bar there is a blue var that runs accros the screen. I have the task bar set to auto hide sometimes when the computer in hung up the task bar drops and exposes this other bar. I also noticed that goimg to certaim webs sites the browser takes an exceptionly long time to come up. this is after the broswer has indicated the its is done. There is a lot of stops and starts when using the internet and some harddrive programs. Its would freeze any from 30sec. to several minutes and then start working. I have ran Avast which often finds something and removes it as far as I know.
I have wingows XP firewall running. I also have SMC running which catches alot of programs trying to connect to the internet. I run teatimer and have spybot search and destroy.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Dear Bleeping Computer Staff,
I understand that you folks get overwhelmed. I wasn't complaining I was really thinking I posted something wrong.
Or perhaps didn't follow proper ettique.
My computert when online or off takes forever to load a page or open a window. It also takes some time to close or minimize a window it sort of shrinks or closes in sections. During online use the computer stops and starts, the computer's busy light is almost always on. Sometimes my fire wall tells me that programs that I am not familiar with are trying to connect to the internet through port this or that.
I have defragged the computer. I went to your tutorial page and cleaned up the computer as best I could. I also ruan a duplicate file finder and discovered many duplicate files, but being unfamiliar with the registry and knowing that windows often creates dup. files I did nothing with that aspect.
I was instructed to post here the DDS log. Do you want me to also attach the other log?

Hello.

A quick look at you logs shows you are clean.

Let's see what we can find.

ViewPoint Programs
I see that you have a ViewPoint program on your computer. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are installed on your computer without your permission, but does not do anything "bad", and are thus considered foistware.

I would suggest that you uninstall these using Add/Remove Programs.

Update Java to Version 6 Update 13
Your current version of Java is outdated. Malware creators can exploit the lesser security of older versions. Please uninstall your current version through Add/Remove Programs. Remove all instances of Java, J2SE Runtime, Java Runtime, and Java Runtime Environment. Restart your computer after uninstalling.

Please download the installer here. Choose "Windows".

Delete the installer after use.

Run Scan with Kaspersky
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.

This scan is for Internet Explorer Only.

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select Run as administrator to perform this scan.
  • Please disable your realtime protection software before proceeding. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open the Kaspersky Scanner page.
  • Click on Accept and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

This scanner will only scan. It does not remove any malware it finds.

Download and Run Scan with GMER
We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.

Please download GMER.zip to your desktop from any of the links below:
LINK1, LINK2
  • Right click on GMER.zip and select "Extract All".
  • Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  • Double click GMER.exe. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  • You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  • Leaving the settings at default, click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.
Please include the log in your next reply.

Please give me an update on the symptoms.

With Regards,
The Panda

The Panda
Here is the GMER log. The symptoms are still persisting. I ran the Kapersky scan but for some reason the save log button was dimmed out and did not click. The report however, said that it found no infected or suspiscious files.
I am suspecting that the rgistry may be cluttered. The reason is because as I watched the scans run I saw many files and regiistry entries from programs that were supposed to have been completley removed. I really don't know.
Thanks
John2

Hello.

Let's try removing some startup items to free up memory.

We'll use HijackThis.

Download, Install, and Save Log with HijackThis
  • Download the installer HERE onto your desktop and double click it.
  • You may be asked for confirmation for running an executable file. Select Run.
  • You will be asked choose the install location. Please leave it at the default:
    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • Select Install.
  • The installation process should only take a few seconds. A shortcut named HijackThis will be created on your desktop so there will be no need to access the HijackThis program directly. The HijackThis window will pop-up after the installation.
  • Click Do a System Scan and Save a Log File.
  • The scan will complete in a moment and the log will pop-up.
  • Copy the contents of the log into your next post.
With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Let's see what we can do.

Use HijackThis to Remove Uneeded Startup Entries
Programs that run automatically at startup can take up memory, causing your computer to be slow. Many of these entries are not needed.

Below is a list of entries in your HijackThis log that can be removed safely. Below each entry, you will find a brief description of it. Some are up to preference.

To remove entries you do not want, open HijackThis (if you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select Run As Administrator), select "Do a system scan only", put a check mark next to those entries and select "Fix checked".

If you experience any issues after removing any items, use the Backup feature to restore the items.

I have run HJT and removed the afore mention files. So far there seems to be some improvement. I can't really say just yet. I just rebooted the machine. I think we can eliminate a possible issue. I ran hpmonitor and the temps and voltage are in acceptable ranges. Perhaps you better tell me what the ranges should be. Here is what I have:
Mainboard 33.0 C
CPU 42.5 C
temp3 33.0 C
HDD 22.0 C
s.m.a.r.t. Status OK
What do you think about getting rid of the junk in the registry? I do normal maint. I just do not mess with the registry.
I would not know where to begin or what to do.

still hanging up in Austin

Hello.

I'm not fimiliar with hardware, so I can't answer the temperature question.

The idea that leftover registry entries cause an issue is not true. Please tell me what registry entries you are refering to specifically.

Please take a new DDS.txt log.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hey Panda,

I notice that some fikes etc. are from uninstalled programs. For example, I uninstalled "Limewire" well there is still remnants of it here and there. The same with itunes. And a few others.
Here is the latest DDS log.
Again many thanks
John2
