When is the last time you were able to hear sound from your sound card? If it was recently, what changed? What type of sound card do you have? Have you tried to remove the device from device manager and have your computer pick it up again. Do you have the drivers for your sound card.

What is the make and model of your computer?
Answer all of the questions and we will try to help you.

It's been several months since this happened.

I have no idea how to check for the sound card.

I have no idea about device manager and picking it up again.

My computer has no name brand. It is a pentium 3 with ME Millinium

To get into Device manager you need to do this:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Click the Device Manager tab.

Do you see any ! in the device manager?
You should be able to see the sound/multimedia settings in there.
What is listed under the sound icons. Drill down as far as you can to get detailed information.

You can also download Everest. This may give us more information and detail.

Everest Download.

With this utility, you can find all of your multimedia related details, and paste and reply to us with all of your detailed information.

Did you see the entries for your sound card in the device manager?

Also, here's the driver that was listed for your sound card:

Creative Labs Sound Card Driver

Do you have a copy of the Sound Blaster Live! CD?

First, double check that everything is connected properly between your sound card and your speakers.

After that, from the Device Manager, find the entries and remove each one for your sound card. Reboot...ME should recognize that the entries are gone, and the next time ME starts up it should redetect your sound card again, and load all of the drivers for you card. Take note of any issues that you see in the device manager, as I mentioned in an earlier post.

Do you have a set of headphone? You could plug you headphones into the audio card to see if their is a problem with your speakers.

Try all of this and post back. Make notes of what occured for each suggestion.

How comfortable are you working inside the computer?
You could remove the entries for the sound card again from device manager. Shut down your computer. Take the cover off of your computer, find and remove your sound card from its' existing motherboard slot, insert it in another motherboard slot, reboot and see what happens.
ME should redetect the card again(it may even ask for your CD} After that, you should see the entries for it in device manager. Try it, let us know EXACTLY what happens for each step.

I have copied steps from Creative Labs below:

Please also note this about static electricity and computers:
Static

Creative Labs.com

PCI Card installation

1. Switch off the system and all peripheral devices and unplug the power cord from the wall power outlet.

2. Remove the cover from the system.

3. Remove the metal plate from one unused PCI slot in your system and put the screw (to be used later).

4. Align the Sound Blaster card with the vacant PCI expansion slot. Press the card gently and evenly into the slot. Ensure the card is seated firmly in the expansion slot.
Secure the card to the expansion slot with the screw.

5. Replace the cover on your system.

6. Plug the power cord into the wall outlet and switch on your system.

Driver Installation
When the card is first inserted, it will be detected by your system.
You will then be prompted to install the drivers.

1. Insert the Sound Blaster installation CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. The drivers are found in the audio\language\win9xdrv directory on the C - you may need to browse to this directory and select the appropriate driver file.

3. Click OK and the drivers will be installed. If you a message appears informing you that a suitable driver cannot be found, make sure that you have specified the correct path to the driver file.

4. If the installation prompts you to insert the Windows 95/98 CD, then do so.

Software Installation

1. Insert the install CD into the CD-ROM drive. The autorun feature will bring up the installation menu.
If the installation CD is not initialized automatically in your PC, the Auto Insert Notification feature in Windows may not be enabled. To Enable auto insert notification:
Open Device Manager by rightclicking the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties. In your Device Manager tab, doubleclick the entry that represents your CD Rom under CD Rom Controllers. In the Settings window, you will find an option called Auto Insert Notification. This option needs to be checked for the Autorun feature to work.

2. You will notice that there are a number of applications on each of the CDs. For example, the installation menu from the Sound Blaster Live! Value CD contains the following sections:
Creative Sound Blaster Live! Experience
Creative Keytar
Creative Rhythmania
Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value
Prody Parrot

3. To install or reinstall any of these, just tick or untick the respective tickbox.

The basic menu structure described above, is replicated on all the installation CDs for our entire Sound Blaster Live! range.

The core software, which is necessary in order for your card to work, is contained in the section called Creative Sound Blaster Live!

The equivalent sections for the other Sound Blaster Live! cards are listed below

For an Sound Blaster Live! Value card - Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value
For the Sound Blaster Live! 1024 (Player) - Creative Sound Blaster Live! Player
For the Sound Blaster Live! Platinum - Creative Sound Blaster Live! Platinum
If you are experiencing installation lockups, or if the installation is discontinued, we suggest you try to install the listed section one by one, to see which section is causing the problem.

Good luck.

If this make you nervous, don't do it.

Perhaps, you can find someone that doesn't mind working inside a computer to do it for you. If this doesn't work, and you have tried all the suggestions, I would guess that your sound card is defective.

Anyways, post back with whatever you decide to do, or if you figure something out.

Good-luck.

Thanks for letting us know. One more thing...Leurgy and I were helping another person with a sound issue lately, one thing that Leurgy suggested that we haven't tried was this:

Go to Control Panel and double click Multimedia and under the Audio tab>Playback>Preferred Device pick Any Available Device. Under the Midi tab>Midi Output>Single Instrument play with the different options to see if that helps.

Try that and see if it helps..Good luck, and let us know what the end result is.
