Video playback skips

Videos skip when I play them. Playback can be from hard drive, cd/dvd or online. This affects Windows Media Player and all videos I try and watch online e.g youtube etc. Additionally, the sound for videos played in WMP distort even though the sound levels are not cranked up.

I cannot trace this back to any changes I made on the computer. Can anyone suggest how I can solve this?
