RSS Feeds Affect Speed

I have an iBook G4 with Firefox 2.9. Often, when I click on a link, it takes forever to load. I see the message "Looking up" and sometimes I get a "timed out connection" message page. A friend suggested that my RSS feeds may be slowing down the connection. Opinions?
