Posted 12 March 2009 - 06:43 AM

My sytem just rebooted itself and then I had delself.bat on my desktop and an infection warning in my system tray.
I now am only running this PC stand-alone (no internet, no network) until I get a fix, or a BC.com guru instructs me to
connect to internet. I am transferring files via a USB floppy, although I can use a flash drive.

Thanks for your help.

Don.

OK,

2 things of note:

1) I got a Rootkit message. I noted down the names of the files.

2) When the run was almost complete, I got a "windows file protection" message. It said that something to the effect that some system files were changed from the original, and to put in an XP pro CD (which I don't have) in order to make fixes. The messages were automated and I don't think waited for a response, or if it did, the ComboFix window eventually said rebooting, and the machine then re-booted.

So here is the ComboFix Log:

Thanks,

Also, I can pursue getting the XP Pro CD mentioned, but that might take some time.

Thanks again.

Hi again,

I should had reminded you to install recovery console when ComboFix asks permission to do it.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=-
"AntiVirusOverride"=-

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe (let ComboFix install recovery console)
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

OK, Blade,

Before I do all this, the affected machine has not been connected to the internet.

After, the ComboFix run, the system tray warning "your computer may be infected" has gone,

but I also have a security message, firewall is off.

My plan would be to turn firewall on and re-connect to internet with the affected machine. Will this put other machines (for instance the laptop I'm typing this on) that are connected to the wireless router at risk?

Thanks,

Don.
