When I open up Internet Explorer, an error message comes up immediately saying "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...".

I have run Spybot S&D and Ad Aware, as well as Microsoft's AntiSpyware, both in and out of Safe Mode.

I have also run a Norton virus scan (Safe Mode).

Here is my HijackThis Log File.

Thank you SO much for any assistance you can provide!

-Will

Hi Will, welcome to BC.

Your log is free of malware. So your problem likely lies elsewhere. I'm going to have you fix the memory dump to see if that helps, am orphaned BHO for MS Money and a known resource hog (OSA9.EXE). After that I suggest you post about this problem in Web Browsing/Email and Other Internet Applications forum and link to this log for reference to those who want to help you with this.

I have an idea what is causing the problem--hp drivers in Global startup are known to cause the memory dump, and there may be some conflict between Earthlink and AOL--but I'll post to that later.

Please follow these steps:

1. First shut down microsoft AntiSpyware time protection, it may interfere with fixing the BHO. You might also try experimenting with it to see if it is somehow blocking IE from starting.

Please open microsoft AntiSpyware.
- Click on Tools | Settings.
- In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
- Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
- Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
- After unchecking these, click on the Save button and close microsoft AntiSpyware.
- Right click on the microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown microsoft AntiSpyware.

3. Scan again with HijackThis 1.99.1. Put a checkmark by the following entries, double-checking to be sure that only these entries are checked:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

4. Close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and then click the "Fix checked" button.

5. Reboot, post a new log and let me know if that has helped any.

6. Also turn off any popup blockers, they often cause these type problems. You already have the Google toolbar with a PUB, so check to make sure the one that came with SP2 is off--go to Internet Options in your Control Panel, Privacy tab, uncheck the box "Block popups". Reboot and if that doesn't help, turn off Google's PUB and experiment with that for a while.

Let me know how it goes.

The fate of all mankind, I see

Is in the hands of fools
