I am on an IBM/Lenovo T60 laptop with Windows XP Pro (2002) SP2 with IE7 browser and Norton Internet Security 2009 and Spyware Doctor.

I recently had a supposed false positive id of Backdoor.Bandok as a result of an incompability between McAfee and Spyware Doctor (hxxp://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56348 and ,hxxp://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=228416>. I tried installing the newest Spyware Doctor to fix the incompatability issue which worked for approx 36 hours. After that Spyware Doctor once again reported that McAfee was corrupted with Backdoor.Bandok. Spyware Doctor automatically quarantined those compoenents and McAfee was not able to function even after those components were released from Spyware Doctor. Attempts to uninstall and reinstall McAfee failed. I finally went out and bought Norton Internet Security 2009 in order to have any virus protection.

Norton Internet Security 2009 and Spyware Doctor (v. 6, I believe) are currently reporting no problems after full system scans. However, I am still having issues with my computer.

I have had problems with:
1. I am unable to open Windows Media Player 11.
2. I am unable to open the standard view of Gmail (in http or https)
3. I am unable to download programs from websites (Adobe Flash and Windows Media Player failed, for example)
4. I am unable to access certain websites that require me to submit information (ironically, Norton Tech Support pages and Gmail Loading Troubleshooting)

I have absolutely no idea how to analyze the hijackthis log so hopefully someone here can help me analyze the log and determine if it can help me with my problems.

That said, it is entirely possible that these problems are caused by Norton or even . Unfortunately, not being able to access any of their tech support pages (namely live chat and e-mail for Norton and troubleshooting for) and after being on hold for over 30 min, I am unable to determine what role if any normal Norton function has in my problems.

UPDATE:

Talked with Norton service tech. Changing Norton settings, disabling Norton, and uninstalling Norton had no effect on my problems suggesting that the problem is not with Norton or is not a problem easily solved by a complete uninstall.

Additionally, unable to download Firefox or Safari so unable to discern if this is a browser (IE7) specific problem.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
