Hello HJT Noob and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: LinkTracker Class - {6A6E50DC-BFA8-4B40-AB1B-159E03E829FD} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\LMF32V.DLL
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {016235BE-59D4-4CEB-ADD5-E2378282A1D9} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\CXTPLS\CXTPLS.DLL (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {014DA6C9-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {FAA356E4-D317-42a6-AB41-A3021C6E7D52} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [XNxc3] C:\GQJTOJ.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xhrmy] C:\WINDOWS\Xhrmy.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MOSearch] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MOSEARCH\BIN\MOSEARCH.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Y356RXd6V] VBSCR71.EXE
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://ny.contentmatch.net (HKLM)
O16 - DPF: {9DBAFCCF-592F-FFFF-FFFF-00608CEC297C} - http://download.weatherbug.com/minibug/tri...?rand=200321216
O16 - DPF: {BF628973-1E86-4D0E-B42C-EDDECFFABDBC} (Bugs AoD Class) - http://player.bugs.co.kr/install/bugsLoader20041018.cab
O16 - DPF: {9BED3AC7-E6D4-43E7-B8A1-1FA502F639E1} (XTools Control) - http://player.bugs.co.kr/install/mv/XTools.cab
O18 - Filter: text/html - {DFAA31C8-A356-4313-9D95-5EDAB46C5070} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\LMF32V.DLL

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\LMF32V.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBSCR71.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\Xhrmy.exe
C:\GQJTOJ.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\CXTPLS\ <--folder

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #7

AdAware SE v1.06

      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Right-click on the list and choose Select All
  • Click the Next button to finish removing the items that were found
  • When finished, REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi HJT Noob. that looks better but there is still something in there that we are not picking up. Let's try a couple of other scans for items that might not show up in the HijackThis log.

Let's run a couple of scans to see if there is anything that might not be showing up in the log.

Download PFind.zip and unzip the contents to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the pfind.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

After you have rebooted start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Post the contents of C:\pfind.txt and the information from the StartupList back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Also, go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:VBSCR71.EXE (lookin in the c:\windows and c:\windows\system folders)
Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Cheers.

REM Notes:
REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters
REM for these two files.
REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.

hey HJT Noob. those scans both looked good. There is only the 1 item left to remove from the log so let's finish that off.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Y356RXd6V] VBSCR71.EXE
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi. Thanks for the help. My computer is already running much faster, but every time I start up the computer, I get a screen telling me that I am missing an important windows file.
"SYSTEM.INI FILE REFERS TO THIS DEVICE FILE BUT IT NO LONGER EXISTS
...
C:\PRGRA~1\AVPERS~1\AVGUARD.VXP
Press any key to continue"
How can I get rid of this message every time I start up the computer?

Hi HJT Noob. Your log is clean. Good job! Now let's look at your error message.

Open Notepad and tehn open the file c:\windows\system.ini. Post the contents of that file back here so I can review it and we'll see what shows up in there.

Cheers.

Hi HJT Noob. I do not see any references to the AVGUARD.VXP file listed in your Syste,.ini file and could not find any information on any file with that name. I believe that the error message might have been for AVGUARD.VXD instead. The AVGUARD.VXD file is a part of AVG Anti-virus which appears to be installed but not working properly on this computer. It might have been disabled by the infection.

Try reinstalling AVG and then doing an update to bring it up to date with the virus definition files. Once that is done do a complete system scan.

After that, reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in. I want to check to make sure that AVG is running properly.

Cheers.

I couldn't find the origional AVG virus protection program, so I redownloaded it and installed it. Unfortunetely the problem at the startup remains the same.

Hi HJT Noob. I think we were looking in the wrong place here. Was the AntiVir antivirus program installed on this machine at one time? Can you cerify if the folder: c:\program files\avpersonal\ is present? If so, and the product has been uninstalled then delete the folder (shich might be gone already if AntiVir was uninstalled and it removed the folder as it should have).

Let's also remove the entry from the log:

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVGCtrl] C:\PROGRAM FILES\AVPERSONAL\AVGCTRL.EXE /min

See if the error message comes up now.

Cheers.

The programs file you mentioned did not exist. I deleted the Hijackthis AVG file, and uninstalled the trial version of AVG, but I keep getting the same error message when I start up the computer.

Hi HJT Noob. I did not want you to uninstal AVG. That was your current anti-virus and now you have none. You should install that back on there or another anti-virus as soon as possible.

The message you are receiving is in regards to a different anti-virus program named AntiVir that appears to have once been installed on the computer.

Let's do this. Get an anti-virus program back on your computer. Since you already have Grisoft's AVG that is fine. Now look for this folder and tell me if it is present on your system: c:\program files\avpersonal.

Now run an HJT StartupList by doing the following:

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Save the Notepad document because I will need you to include the information into your next post.

Post back here with the information from the StartupList and the presence of the avpersonal folder and we'll go from there.

Cheers.

OT
