Hey guys,

I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide to addressing this problem.

Problem: Using IE 7 and a Google toolbar to search for any topic. If I click on the search result link I'm redirected to Windowsclick.com and on to some other site that is remotely related to the search result. It only happens in IE, not Google Chrome. It is also very clever in that it will not allow you to go Ad-Aware or Hijackthis websites. I had to use Google Chrome and force install Hijackthis. In this environment of pay for click revenue model I understand why these types of malware virus are developed, but they are bad for the users.

I disabled all the add-ons and the problem still persist. I also adjusted my pop-up block to the highest level and this problem seems to invoke the pop-up blocker. All of this seems to indicate that the problem is some place other than my browser.

I also noticed the last entry on the file below references Symantec, except I use McAfee....so is this a clue?

Thank you very much !

I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as you requested to my desktop and double-clicked, but the program will not launch. It will also launch HijackThis either. This virus seems to have a way to defeat these Malware programs. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
EFSTRO

Hello efstro,

Please rename Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to mbam, and retry. If it doesn't work uninstall it, and re-download it. Save it as mbam and try to run it again.

HijackThis is installed and doesn't run? If this is the case do this:

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe and try to run it again.

Let me know how it goes. If still no go, describe any messages both tools give.

I removed and re-downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware about five times. I was able to get it to install a couple times, but it would never start-up after installation. I don't get a error message, just a hour glass for a few seconds and then back to idle. I have changed the name to everything but a child of god by going directly to the program file and still nothing....it simply will not start.

I did get HijackThis to start and have attached the file.

Next steps please.

Hello efstro,

I want you to be patient, i know you had a rough time because whatever you did couldn't install and make Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware run, but if we will clean your pc, you will need to be patient. Sometimes tools are not working due to infections or other problems. We'll make them work.

G:\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe

I need you to install HijackThis on your C:\ drive. This is important as i need it on your C:\ so it can create also backups.

I believe the reason you can't install programs is due to some restrictions which excist on your pc and shows in the lines i want you to fix using HijackThis.

Did you have Symantec any time on this pc?

Before we move on, please move HijackThis from G:\ Drive which i suppose is a flash drive to your C:\ drive, then fix the 2 lines below, and post back a new HijackThis log.

If it's not possible to transfer HijackThis on C:\ drive and make it work, fix the 2 lines while HijackThis is on G:\ drive and then try to install HijackThis on C:\ drive.

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
Don't forget to re-enable it, after i tell you that your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, after i tell you that your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
After you do the above, try to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware one more time and let me know if it worked. If yes, run it and post back the report as i already explained in my previous post.
Post back a new HijackThis log, so we can continue cleaning your pc.

Answer my question about Symantec please. Can you see in Add/Remove programs any signs of Norton or Symantec?

Please do not post attachments.

Sorry if I came across as inpatient, I'm a little ticked with this virus thing....

Answers to your questions:
A couple years ago I did have Symantec installed, but uninstalled it in favor of McAfee which is installed now. No signs of it in the Add / remove programs. We may have left over folders / files from this program. I also completed the actions related to Ad-Watch and Spybot resident program, however Spybot the main program did not boot either so I just carried out the other instructions. Now IE 7 does not start for some reason....all other browsers open.

I removed and reinstalled HijackThis on the C drive (G and H drives is a single partitioned 500gig HD since I was running out of room on the C Drive) and removed the two files that you mentioned. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware now runs. I launched and ran the program and it flagged about 20 items that it removed. Several files were not removed, but were upon reboot.

Hello efstro,

A couple years ago I did have Symantec installed, but uninstalled it in favor of McAfee which is installed now. No signs of it in the Add / remove programs. We may have left over folders / files from this program.

Ok, we'll remove Symantec remainants.

I also completed the actions related to Ad-Watch and Spybot resident program, however Spybot the main program did not boot either so I just carried out the other instructions. Now IE 7 does not start for some reason....all other browsers open.

So you couldn't open Spybot to disable it? It's still running
Can you see the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)? If yes let me know. We need to disable Tea Timer, and uninstall it, since you are having problems with it, as it can interfere with my fixes.

Although you say you disabled Ad-Watch i can see it running. Did you enable it again?
Please let me know. If disable steps didn't work, we will need to uninstall this also, and re-install it after you are clean.

At which step IE7 stopped working? After you fixed those 06 lines?

I won't give you any steps for now, let's deal with these first.

To explain why i am not moving on with my fix, i will give you to run a tool, which needs all programs to be disabled, as they will prevent it also from making fixes and changes/removal of infections from the registry.

Yes, I could not disable Spybot S&D, but I was able to disable the Resident program. Yes, I can see Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).

Yes, I re-enabled Ad-Ware it after I completed the work. Maybe we just need to uninstall just to be sure, but it did appear to be disabled. I'm running the "Free anniversary edition" and the screens were not exactly as you described in your instructions.

I deleted the two lines and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then re-booted. I then checked IE7 after the re-boot (I did not check it after I deleted those two lines) ( because it was a automatic re-boot after Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ran due to the remaining malware that could only be deleted except upon a re-boot according to Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Additionally I ran Ad-ware late last night and it discovered "Win32rootkit.TDSS" file in "C:\windows\systems32\drivers\UACppeicngdsys". that it can not seem to remove it has detected it twice now (last night after I performed the work you requested) Ad-ware is also requesting a re-boot to clean and a statement says "re-boot cleaner" initializing during the boot process before the boot is complete.

Hello efstro,

Yes, I could not disable Spybot S&D, but I was able to disable the Resident program. Yes, I can see Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).

This is a sign that Spybot is not disabled. Try to do it again following carefully my instructions. If you succeed you should exit the program and upon reboot, it won't show.

Please uninstall Ad-Aware.

Let me know and try to keep the pc, as much possible away from the internet. I need you to disable properly both programs, and uninstall them.

Win32rootkit.TDSS

This is a real baddie, but we'll remove it don't worry. Just let me know if both programs are removed.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

It was really hard to get Combofix to open....but I was able to get it to run. I did notice that 023-Symantec Network Drivers Service is still there....interesting, thought we killed that little fella.

By the way IE7 opens now and it does not redirect me as it once did. I will test it a little more to confirm. I hope that you will be able to advise me on steps I can take to prevent these little "baddies" from invading my space in the future.

Hello efstro,

It was really hard to get Combofix to open....but I was able to get it to run. I did notice that 023-Symantec Network Drivers Service is still there....interesting, thought we killed that little fella.

Good you managed to run Combofix it removed most of the infection which created your problem. Only a few to remove now.

No we didn't remove Symantec, i have it in mind, and will remove it in this fix.

By the way IE7 opens now and it does not redirect me as it once did. I will test it a little more to confirm. I hope that you will be able to advise me on steps I can take to prevent these little "baddies" from invading my space in the future.

Nice, well there is a lot you can do to keep you system as much as protected you can. That doesn't mean you are completely protected. You shouldn't user P2P programs, don't visit suspicious sites, don't download programs from untrusted sites, never open emails from unknown persons, don't use cracks, and generally try to surf and use Internet in a safe manner.

Keep all your programs up todate, install all Microsoft updates, run your Anti-Virus daily, and other protection programs at least a week, are also some measures to follow. :thumbup2:

As a side note, do not use more than one Antispyware programs running on start up. When more than one runs on start up, they make the pc slower and buggy, think the possibility that both are trying to remove the same infection the same time. You can start them mannually.

I will give you some additional protection programs except of Spybot in my all clean speech which i suspect is not very far away. ;)

I will remove the ex-scheduled scans from Ad-Aware and Spybot, but not removing the programs folders, as you will probably install them later.

Do you know what is this program? Please let me know.

Let's proceed to my fix now.

I'll give you a lot of things to do, take your time.... :)
