I can run firefox and search using google. However, I can't open any of the search results. Avg and Ad-aware don't show any problems but Malwarebytes won't open. The day this started there was an automatic windows update (I thought I had those turned off) which downloaded and then installed. I tried to restore the system to a time prior to the problem but that won't work either. So far i've been unable to download programs that might help, like spybot. I'm about to yank this harddrive and cannibalize the backup from my sons very old machine so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would you try renaming the MBAM installer to somethiing like whit.com

If already installed you might have to redownload

You can go into the program folder and rename the main executable mbam.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

You will have to click on it to start

MBAM has no .exe file. I was able to download the file but the setup won't run. A family member directed me to the windows system 32 file which was full of stuff that apparently shouldn't be there. I have my important stuff backed up so I'm not against wiping the drive and starting over. I just need to get a disk from dell.

Show Hidden Folders/Files
  • Open My Computer.
  • Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  • Select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  • Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  • Click Yes when prompted.
  • Click OK.
  • Close My Computer.
Well this could be educational until you get the disks

I made the changes as you stated. I also called Dell and it was a pain in the ass, as I thought it would be. They wanted to charge me $50 for the discs since I hadn't requested them during the warranty period. I found a request form on their site for them so I'll see if they send them or not. I saw a few forums suggesting that ctl + F11 might reset the system. Could this work? Thanks for the help.

Why don't you ask over in the xp forum about dell's reinstall options?
