Ok, just finished reinstalling windows because thins thing took out my networking completely, and after comprehensive scanning and cleaning (I use avast! home edition) I started reinstalling my programs and BAM! it's back!

So there is obviously some malware hiding in my data files somewhere as well as I am infected once again. Gonna try to do it right this time so here I am!

Here's my DDS log:

DDS (Ver_09-02-01.01) - NTFSx86

I hope after I get rid of this thing you guys can help me to prevent infection in the future. I thought I had done everything right by running antivirus software and firewall but there is obviously a hole in my security plan! What else do I need to do? What kind of infection is this and why wasn't I protected by my security software?

Thanks a bunch and hope to hear from someone soon!

Don

Well, don't know if anyone is paying any attention or not but I think I solved the issue, and with a Microsoft tool no less!

It appears I had a "Rootkit" virus which is no surprise cuz I had this problem back in December. I downloaded a 60 day free trial of Avast! Pro which includes an anti-rootkit module and that fixed the original problem.

But like a cheap dumbazz when the trial ran out I downgraded to the free version and bam, the virus was back.

Anyway, after reinstalling Windows no less (yes, an RK can survive a reinstall!) I was determined to get to the root (pun intended) of the problem. The aforemention tool was Microsoft's Rootkit Revealer.

After running a scan it found 2 files hidden from the operating system, and 1 null terminated registry entry (see the info on rootkits for an explanation). It allowed me to remove the 2 hidden files and that seems to have done the trick! The registry issue is another matter since it takes another piece of software to reveal null terminated registry entries. I tried and failed to locate the entry but it seems the hidden files were the real culprit.

So there you have it! I would still like an analysis of the previous post just to make sure I didn't miss anything but be forewarned I have since installed more software, specifically my printer!

So yes folks, yet another anti-virus program feature is REQUIRED to keep you clean - Rootkit Protection!

Arrgghh!

Is it true? Once you go Mac you never go back? I'm just about ready!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
