Hi; I'm running Windows XP SP2 Professional 2002 version, my CD-ROM drive is a Samsung SC-148A, and my DVD-ROM drive is a Philips DVD+RW DVD8701. I'm using Nero 6 Ultra Edition to burn things, usually through the StartSmart interface or occasionally Burning ROM.

For background/context, I have had several other computer problems lately, link link link link, but I suppose the relevant one is that DVD burning has been acting up with the DVD drive reading blank and burned DVD-Rs as blank CDs.

Despite that, I have been able to burn mp3 CDs fine until now. Last night I ran Nero6 StartSmart and setup my music compilation, then selected to do a simulation first and verify the data afterward; the simulation finished successfully but when it started actually burning I heard a weird scraping noise, different than the one my failing hard-drive has been making lately, and the burning failed. I then attempted (with a new blank CD) to use Nero6 Burning ROM instead to see if this time it would burn properly it also failed. This is very annoying; while there are other ways to backup than burning CD/DVDs, I have no mp3 player / iPod / etc. and rely solely on CDs; I have new music on my failing computer and want to be able to listen to it.

I saved the error log for one of the burning sessions and enclose it below. Any ideas for what I should do or what might be causing this?

It seems to me that your Drive has been failing for some time. The first thing I would do would be to change the offending drive.
