hey guys,

i purchased a laptop a week ago, and it has been running fine until yesterday night. i left it on (with charge) for about 2 hours. when i returned, the computer was running extremely slow. i restarted it twice, and there was no change. sometimes my mouse pointer would lag behind my movements, and most of the times browsers and windows took a really long time (20-60 seconds) to open, and firefox and opera don't respond for about a minute when i open a new tab and many times they stop responding all at random. i'm running a full scan of my computer and it has detected 2 trojans in my recycle bin, which i have deleted. i only have norton endpoint protection as my AV (uni gives only endpoint protection as free AV, no kaspersky even though i love that much more than norton. ) and i have spybot S&D as my AS.

i tried opening the task manager twice when everything stopped responding, but it didn't open. i restarted the computer twice, but no change.

i deleted limewire as a precaution anyways. i feel the computer's performing slightly better, but i haven't installed anything else which is a computer hog.

what i don't get is how it slowed down permanently ALL OF A SUDDEN. it's not like i left it with a game on or with it installing something. so strange.

please help. i'm running vista 64bit on 4 gb ram and Turion X2 2.2 ghz proccy, so there's no performance issue here, so i don't know what really happened here.

This is my hijackthis log on Safe mode (if you guys want, i can start it on normal mode too, but it would take a long time for me :thumbup2: )

the task manager doesn't show any difference when the computer runs slow, the total amount of memory used (1.5GB) is the same, and cpu usage is also the same (about 9%). there are no processes which take up a lot of memory or CPU.

in safe mode, vista is fast, but it has norton as a startup program, so idk if norton's the one causing the slow speeds. However, in safe mode, it says that norton's File System Auto-Protect is malfunctioning. any thoughts?

i started vista in normal mode and disabled norton antivirus. Results were funny. for the first minute or so, access and word started smoothly. task manager also opened with no problems. problem started when i started opera. then the usual problem started again. however, on safe mode, browsers open fine!

while disabling a few programs from startup using Startup Manager (not msconfig) i found out that I cannot disable an acer startup service -eRecovery Service. Startup manager says it's corrupted, but maybe it's just because acer programmed it so it couldn't be unchecked as a startup program.

I've taken a few screenshots of my computer in normal mode:

This is about a minute after vista started- as usual, no slowdown yet, nothing unusual, NORTON IS DISABLED.

I opened IE first, and it popped up fast. opened a few tabs, no slowdown yet. i opened firefox too, and there still wasn't any slowdown.

Then came the first slowdown. during these slowdowns, CPU usage went down to 8-11%, and didn't change much, except immediately after the slowdown, when it jumped to 25 or 50% spikes and then went down again.

This is the screenshot of the 2nd slowdown.

I need urgent help guys, have an assignment in a few days and I can't use my laptop in it's current state!

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
