Well, I downloaded the free AVG Anti-Virus...and used it on the infected computer....because it still had a message on IE that the computer was infected by Spyware...and it came up with a ton of Viruses!!
Trojan Horse Downloader.Agent.12.H
12.BF
11.Q
12.D
Trojan Horse Start Page 19.A0
21.AR

and probably a whole lotta others as well.....it healed something like 819 infected files in the computer...but now, the computer boots up....and goes to the Desktop but, no icons, no title bars, nothing but the mouse pointer....I'm wondering if I have to re-load Windows XP?

Hello, I think I know what happened. Download next tool:

http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/FixO.exe

Open taskmanager (holding CTRL-ALT-DEL together), and choose new task.
Browse to where you downloaded and saved FixO.exe
Run FixO.exe
This will create a new folder called FixO
Browse via taskmanager to that folder, open it and run FixO.bat

It will generate a log afterwards. Copy and paste the contents of that log together with a new hijackthislog.
