I think my computer may have contracted a new variant of Antivirus 360. I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 fully patched (AFAIK).
My symptoms are:
1. When I input a search term into google, it returns a legitimate page of links, but when I click on one of those, I am taken first to "http://traveluntilyoungxx.com/?q=test%20search" then redirected to yellowpages, couponmountain, or another seemingly random site. This affects both IE and Firefox.
2. I've discovered that the methodology of the above redirection is that my browsers are set to use "localhost:7171" as a proxy server. If I disable this proxy, the problem is (temporarily) alleviated.
3. I get popups every few minutes that say Warning!!! "Your computer contains various signs of viruses & malware programs presence. Your system requires immediate antivirus check! Antivirus 360 will perform a quick & free scanning of your PC for viruses & malicious programs." When I close the popup, a pseudo-windows explorer interface comes up (sorry, no screenshot. will update with one later if it pops up again).

Observations:
As mentioned above, there's a proxy server running on port 7171 which shouldn't be there.
There's a c:\windows\pp2.exe file that I don't recognize.

What I've done/tried:
Installed, updated, and ran (quick and full scan) MBAM. It found a few things (sorry, don't remember what), but no antivirus 360.
Installed, updated, and ran SuperAntiSpyware. It found nothing.
installed and ran smitfraudfix
Downloaded and installed autoruns and disabled items (mostly non-malware stuff like quicklaunchers and the like).
Deleted all old user profiles and ran ccleaner on my main profile.
will be running sunbelt vipre after posting this and will update if it solves problem, but I'm not hopeful.

Thanks so much for your help!
Joe

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums.

Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. Please download Trend Micro - HijackThis. Do a new scan with Trend Micro - HijackThis and post it in your next reply. Thank you for your patience.

Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so.

While we are working on your HijackThis log, please:
  • Reply to this thread; do not start another!
  • Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so.
  • Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
  • Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work.
  • Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix.
  • Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix.
  • Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.
Thanks.
