I have for the past few weeks been experiencing a very slow login process immediately after booting the system. The system is a IBM Thinkpad T60p running Windows XP w/SP3 with an Intel T2600 CPU, and 2G of memory. It's setup to dual boot to OpenSUSE 11 and the Linux side of things doesn't have this sluggishness which lead to believe that it's not a hardware problem but rather a software one. I've tried a number of different tacks to fix the problem. I've done the general disk cleanup (removing unused programs, directories, etc), defragmented the drive as well as pagefile/hiberation defragmenting. I've run complete scans using McAfee virus scanner, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Malbyteware, CCleaner, and Advance Registry Optimizer. All show nothing wrong. I've tweaked the services based on BlackViper's recommendations, and followed other suggestions in the performance documents on the site as best as I could.

This seems to have started when I ran windows update and got a .NET 3.5 service pack 1 update. I have no idea if this is related to my problem or not, it may just be a coincidence. But I didn't have 3.5 installed at the time. I tried uninstalling the service pack, installing 3.5, and then reinstalling the service pack, but at each step I didn't see improvement in the boot/login time.

I'm close to just backing up the system and reformatting the drive. It's probably where I'm headed anyway but I'd prefer not doing that if I don't have to.

To be clear about the problem. I boot the system and it comes up with the login screen fairly quickly. I then log in, and the system pauses as applications, etc are started. This process takes almost 5 minutes to complete which is not how it was behaving. Something has changed and I really don't know what.

Hopefully I've followed the process correctly this time and can get a quick look at this.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

R,
K
