I'm trying to help this kid out with his computer (Compaq 5K, Windows ME) and the Sound card doesn't work at all...it's the built in one, on the Mobo. the recovery disc...is a piece of junk...any ideas? tricks? besides using the computer as a anchor? or a door-stop? thanks for your time.

The exact make and model number of the Compaq will enable us to determine the chipset and motherboard and the required drivers.

"5000" isn't close enough.

CAUTION: Installing incorrect drivers or following incorrect troubleshooting procedures could damage your computer. Many Compaq Presarios are identified on the front of the computer by a series number rather than the actual model number. For example, your Presario may appear to be a 5000 model PC, but it is actually a 5000 series PC. The correct model number could be 5WV283. If you have a 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, or 8000 series PC, you need to identify the correct model number of your PC before locating product support information.

With the correct model number you can get your drivers here.

You may be able to install the drivers using the Add New Hardware Wizard in Control Panel. Just be sure that you take the drivers from the Compaq CD or the Restore Partition (D:) if its there.

When you run the wizard it first looks for plug & play then it will look for non p&p. If it finds something press the Details button to see what it is. If you don't want to go any further you can just cancel out. If it doesn't find anything you can pick from a list. In the list pick Sound Controllers. If you keep going take the option to Pick the driver from a list and specify either D: or E: (if thats the CD drive). You can browse these areas from there and you would look for a folder called Drivers or Sound, but don't limit your search too much.

What are you seeing in Control Panel>System under Multimedia? If you have any Unknown Devices, highlight those and go to properties. Look for Update Driver and point that to the same drivers as above.

If you don't want to try the Add New Hardware Wizard, and you don't need to, follow the instructions found here. Scroll down to Step 4, HP Desktop PCs - Restoring Original Drivers and Software, and click on that link. Don't ignore the Bios instructions or the line out stuff if that doesn't work in case someone has been playing around in there.
