Just a quick question guys, how do I disable my firewall so I can put on peoplepc? I looked in control panel and didn't see it, (like you can in xp). I looked in the help section but it said there was no such topic. Whats up with that?

Unlike other more modern OS's ,Windows 98SE does not have an inbuilt Firewall ; how are you presently connecting to the internet and ,of interest, what message are you getting when you attempt to ??download the ' People's PC'?

Hello snowdrop,
now that I'm aware that I'm naked I have to be cautious of who I talk to and tell what!

Naturally, anyone with a street name like Snowdrop is high on the suspect list! LOL

However, heres the deal!

I have dial up and use a land line (phone line). The problem is that every time I want to get on the net I have to manually put peoplepc on the computer. I keep their CD in the CD drive. Keep in mind I would like to be like normal people and just double click their desktop icon to get started but thats not how I do it. If I try to down load and set the account up like normal, I get all the way to the end and it won't finish installing. I have to restart my computer, try to reinstall and fail again. So I just get around that by installing it just far enough that it dials the INTERNET then I just bring up my IE page and get on from there.

I have called India (peoplepc) but I can't stand talking to them. I can't understand them, they speak such bad English! (Of course I blame this on the British) From what I can understand from them they say its an Internet provider problem not a peoplepc problem. I thought they were my INTERNET provider. For some reason when I get on the net and I check my task master I find two Peoplepc on line signup's running and two dialer's. When I take off one dialer my INTERNET runs faster.

I get a message sometimes like - there has been an error with my dialer Modula and it is trying to split.
I thought maybe it was because my fire wall was on. At the beginning of the install it suggest that you disable it because it might not let peoplepc install.

So their you go, thats the problem! Of course now, it seems to be the least of my problems. I don't know when you'll get this so I'll keep checking back to see what you have to say! Until then, well, I'm off to find some fig leaves! LOL Thanks!

I've never had a firewall in Win98 so why do I need one now? I have nothing personal on my computer so its not worth hacking.

Yeah, it is. I found that very same page but I've been doing a little research and I'm hearing some bad things about zonealarm. I'm down loading another fire wall right now from pctools. I'll try it and see if I like it. But thanks for the look out though!

LOL, yeah I'm into comedy movies! But I find a lot of good comedy no matter where I turn in every day life too, it's all in how you look at things!

I have a firewall now and it seems to be OK! If it gives me any problems though I'll take a look at the one you mention! Have you seen Snowdrop? True to his name he popped in out of nowhere and melted away just as fast! I thought maybe he knew something about peoplepc and could help me but I haven't heard back from him.

I have always used ZA firewall and antivirus on my system that uses Win98SE and love it. The one I have used on it for the last couple of years is 6.1.737. Seems like I did not like the version after that though but all the ones from 6.1.737 down worked great for me
