Posted 01 March 2009 - 11:29 AM

I allowed a friend of mine to use my machine to play a few games. Seemes he wanted a trainer and downloaded and ran an .exe without telling me. I was able to stop the pop ups from occuring. However when I went to load a game (F.E.A.R. 2) the .exe runs but the game doesn't boot. The only reason I know that it's running is I rebooted after nothing happened thinking I required a restart and I recieved the "End program now" dialog with the FEAR.exe as the program it was trying to close. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL also does nothing. I attempted to run it dirrectly from the .exe and an error window appears:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start Button, and then click Search."

Same thing happens when I attempt to run Regedit or any *.reg files for that matter. I'm at quite a loss and unsure how to proceed. I thank you in advance for any help that can be rendered. Following is my DDS log:

No worries about the delay. I was able to fix the .exe issue. But I still am un able to access my task manager as well as run any kind of reg edit. In all honesty at this point it's more of just an annoyance than a major issue. But help none the less would be nice. ^_^ Here is my Hijack this log:

Hii there,

Okay, let's find the problem then. :thumbup2:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read. Please open Notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hi there,

No problem with the word wrap....just one of those things. :) I see "No action taken." on those. Did you let MBAM clean them after you got the report? If not, please run it again and this time let it clean all it finds. :thumbup2: Post the report in your reply, please, and let me know how it's running. :step4:

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

Cool, thanks. :thumbup2:

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: XML module - {500BCA15-57A7-4eaf-8143-8C619470B13D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml71.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft netswitch] C:\WINDOWS\system32\jwtch32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSFox] C:\DOCUME~1\Deimos\LOCALS~1\Temp\yyy9964.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cognac] C:\DOCUME~1\Deimos\LOCALS~1\Temp\2DE.tmp.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Navigate to and delete the following file(s)(if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jwtch32.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\Deimos\LOCALS~1\Temp\yyy9964.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\Deimos\LOCALS~1\Temp\2DE.tmp.exe

Reboot your computer.

Please let me know how it's running now. :)

Well I did the scan, and all that was there was CTHELPER.EXE. Witch I stoped and I looked for the *.exe's you mentioned, however to no avail. Seems I still can't run reg edit, or get the taskmgr to pop up. Though it seems strangly aside from thoughes little probems everything else seems to be running fine. Asside from the inability to close a locked up EXE. heheh. Once again I want to thank you for your help and time.

Hi,

hhmmmm......let's look deeper then :

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! :) If McAfee still gives you trouble, you may have to temporarily uninstall it. It's famous for not getting along with others. :thumbup2:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
