Hello all
I have a problem with WMP. Sometimes when I click on a link to watch video
WMP opens I mean the skin opens and in the bottom left says connecting to media
but nothing happens. The lights on my dsl box quit blinking but I get no codes or anything
it just does nothing. But if I close WMP and click on link again it may work.
Sometimes I click on a link several times before it works and sometimes it works the first time.
Here is what I have done so far.
Windows Defender, CCleaner, Adaware, Spybot, Superantispyware, Asquared, Malware Bytes & AVG
I have WMP 11 so I uninstalled it using add/remove programs and it went back to version 9
but still did the same thing so I put it back to version 11. I did not use the uninstall windows componets
feature on the left side of the add/remove program box.
I ran repair internet explorer (start>run>sfc /scannow) and that didnt fix it.
I have done "checkdisc" & defrag. I have used system restore back to December 19th (thats as far as it goes)
but that didnt help. I went into Player options and checked "connect to internet overides all other commands"
still the same thing.
I think thats it.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Evenflow
*Edit* I forgot to say I am using XP

Hello frankp316
The last few weeks I have been reading the board in hopes to
find a solution to my problem and I have seen where several
members use and recommend vlc. I havent installed it but I have
been to the site and checked it out. I have thought about installing it
but I would like to fix my problem if possible first. I could install it but that
wouldnt tell me why WMP dosent work right. I am someone who likes having
everything work the way it should. Would installing it in some way help to figure
out what is wrong with my WMP?
I also forgot to mention I have also ran several online scanners like
Windows live one care, eset, bit defender, f-secure, trendmicro & kaspersky
but they didnt help either.
Thank You for the reply I appreciate it.

Err, you might be getting some bad connections from the original site. You said it works sometimes, and it doesn't work other times. Im suggesting it's a connection/buffering issue, but try VLC. Works very efficiently.

Hi swordie
Yes it does work sometimes.
It itsnt site specific. It could be any site
it could even be a link in an email someone sent.
Anything internet related that takes WMP.
It works fine so far if I just put in a cd and listen.
It has always worked fine till sometime in December.
When WMP is messing up I can still use explorer to surf internet
so if it is a connection problem it is only with WMP and not
something that causes me to totally lose internet connection.
I probably will install VLC but I still want to fix problem.
Something had to happen and I would like to figure it out and fix it.
If I just start using VLC something will still be wrong with WMP.
Thank You
All the best

When I mean Connection problem, not the exact one which we cannot go online with. This connection problem is kind of a streaming issue. If you have a low grade DSL/Cable internet, this may happen alot. What type of internet do you use?

And I'm starting to believe you might have some sort of Buffer Overflow issue too..
Who said I couldn't have everything?

Then it's most likely an Buffer Overflow issue. I'm not sure to how fix that. Sorry. I personally think it's an Streaming issue, but I hardly doubt it's spyware. Do another MBAM/SAS scan just to make sure.

I have done them many times since the problem started.
I run all scans listed in my first post every weekend.
I did them yesterday.
Maybe I should call my dsl company. They have
24 hour support. If they need to they will come to the house and check it for free.
Think maybe that will help?
Thank you

Perhaps. They are technical professionals after all. It never hurts to get something your not sure about checked. For all we know, they just might know.

You have to find out if the problem is with WMP or something else. VLC is the most versatile media player anywhere. That's why you should try it instead of hitting your head against the wall with WMP because many users have switched to VLC because of the kind of problems you are having. If VLC doesn't work, you'll know that the problem is something else. But chances are pretty good that it will work and you'll be a lot happier with VLC as your default media player.

I got this fixed. Heres how.
First of all since I posted I got new ram installed.
Not for that problem but just to speed my computer up a bit.
I read a post here called system very laggy.
In this post fairjoeblue told another user to uninstall his AVG
and do a reinstall using custom settings leaving the check mark out of
Link Scanner & Languages. I have AVG and thought
I would try that to see if it speeded up my computer even more. Which it did.
But as a plus my WMP quit acting up. I did this on June 18th and it has worked
perfect ever since. I have had AVG free for several years and my WMP worked fine.
I have no idea why all of a sudden it started messing up WMP. But it works now.
Thought I would let you know in case someone else has this problem.
Thanks to all who replyed
